"Here’s how THE nicest DO gets a 1 star: My menopause was pretty unremarkable. 8 years ago and just last April I asked for a hormone panel. “WHY?” She asks. Because they’re important. I would like to check my levels because a,b, c. She said: No, you’re just getting older, things change.” SO, DO smartpants. I went to a men’s health and weight- loss clinic. I asked THEM for a women’s hormone panel and all my other bloodwork. I had so few hormones (estrogen testosterone, progesterone) they barely registered. Turns out I did not have memory issues; nor was I depressed. But thanks for offering me a referral to a neurologist and some psychotropic meds for depression. What I NEEDED was hormone replacement therapy. I’m fine now. I feel better. I don’t feel scattered. My joints stopped hurting. For a 150.00 blood test and HRT my insurance completely covers? I’m BACK to feeling like myself. I have energy again and I’m no longer scatterbrained; The sad part? My insurance would have covered the blood work EIGHT years ago and last April. How hard is it?!! (If I’d been a man with erection issues? There’d been an immediate hormone check and no one would suggested he needed to get used to growing older, denied medical testing and been offered anti depressants. If you’re female reading this? Your hormones ARE very important to ALL of your health and you have a RIGHT to knowledge about them. It doesn’t really matter what your physician “thinks” during an 8-12 minute time period of your annual gyno check; They ARE your business. I should not have been so desperate for care to basically beg a men’s health clinic to private pay for what should be a informed level of care with my gynecologist. And if ANY gynecologist brushes off your concerns re hormonal levels to “you’re getting older, things change deal with it” answer? Find a new doctor. Not only is it ageist? It’s also extremely sexist. Update: Greenlee, thanks for responding. For 8 years I saw you and for 8 years you absolutely failed me as a doctor. For 8 years I thought I had had a stroke or had early onset Alzheimer’s. If you don’t like dealing with older women’s health and don’t take our concerns seriously? You should limit your practice to clients whose issues you are more aligned with taking seriously. You literally burned my clock for 8 years saying “I was fine just aging” based on ZERO facts and no knowledge whatsoever as to what was actually happening inside my body or the condition I was in. If I’d still lived in Saint Joseph when I finally resolved my own health issues? I’d have made an appointment just to tell you how it felt being mistreated and left untreated by you for 8 years. If you get nothing else from this? You should drop the line “well you are getting older…” in favor of : “You know, these are legitimate concerns. Let’s do some bloodwork and see what’s going on and see if there’s anything that we can do to help.”"
