"Not only is his bedside manner lacking, he misdiagnosed my son. I could understand that it takes time to figure out an illness if it was something complicated but constipation is not a new illness. We started seeing the Dr because my son complained of stomach pain often. He tested my son for celiac and a few other things. When they were negative he wrote scripts for anxiety meds and another to decrease the amount his intestines contracted. His nurse scheduled our next check up without asking what day/time we would like and sent us out the door. On the next visit I requested his medication be switched to a pill as the liquid tasted horrible and he was struggling to get it down. The Dr got an attitude because I had not chosen that form from the beginning (my son is 7 and I didn’t think he would swallow a pill yet) and claimed the insurance would not cover that. I am not worried about cost that is my business, I just want my son better. At this point I had our regular pediatrician write the script for a pill and we continued on for another month all while the symptoms got worse. I finally asked our ped for a recommendation to Children’s Mercy where after a short telemedicine visit and being sent for an X-ray they diagnosed him with moderate constipation and set us up with a plan to treat at home. The meds Dr. Shaukat put him on before ordering a simple X-ray or further diagnostics when test results came back neg made my son’s condition worse by decreasing the movement in his intestines and furthered his pain. Pretty sad when you have the patient at your finger tips and can’t figure out a simple thing as that when Children’s Mercy figured it out via telemedicine. Seek medical care for your child elsewhere."
"He saw my son for gastro issues, and he really took the time to listen to my wife and I. He even picked up the phone to speak with my wife about our son. I can't say enough positive things about him, but he really cares about his patients and is very thorough."
"Dr. Shaukat has always done an amazing job at making me feel heard as a parent. He answers all my questions thoroughly and doesn’t rush the appointment. When I call, his nurses are always so friendly and normally call me back quickly when I have questions for the doctor."
"Dr. Shaukat has seen 2 of my 3 children. His bedside manner was amazing and he made sure we understood everything and answered all our questions! With his busy schedule he did not make our visit seem rushed at all! It is a relief to know that Joplin finally has a GI specialist for children! Our family is grateful and we highly recommend!"
"First he questioned why Children’s Mercy diagnosed my son as autistic (a year and a half ago), because he “doesn’t seem autistic so why did they diagnose him with autism” even though he is not a child psychologist, or Behavior specialist, and witnessed my son’s behavior for maybe 10 minutes. Not sure why it was brought up by him since it was irrelevant to his care. Then, he stated we shouldn’t be concerned by my son not eating, complaining of pain, early satiety, and showing signs of malnutrition because he isn’t losing weight, and that I’m just over worrying because I’m a mom. I worked in the healthcare field for many years and know when something is going on, especially with my child. Then, he made up an entire list of medications for my son to take, and said he needed to stop 1 medication that he is currently taking that is working. Why would we stop something that’s working to take a medication that doesn’t even make sense to prescribe? The pharmacist was surprised at his choice of meds, and even stated a supplement he had recommended was for kids with feeding tubes and not meant to be drank orally. My son struggles to take even pediasure so why would you think he would take something that tastes horrible and isn’t really meant to be drank? Dr. Shaukat said we will follow up in 2 months, the nurse scheduled our appointment, not even asking what days work the best, and said if that doesn’t work to call, and sent us on our way. I think we will be seeking medical care elsewhere."
