"I was in the hospital under heavy pain medication for broken ribs when I apparently made a statement about slitting my wrists. (I have NEVER said anything like that unless I was drugged, and I have no memory of having made a statement like that.) Because of that, I was transferred to ANEW. For the first few days I was having hallucinations and was in pain. I don't know if they were still giving me the heavy pain medication or not. I have little memory of my first few days there. Once those pain medications wore off, I was fine. Upon release, I was reading my file and didn't see any mention of broken ribs or heavy pain medication, which is probably why they were less than careful when moving me. I must say that the staff was exceptional! They were helpful and respectful. I never encountered a problem. But, I did not fight them or otherwise cause problems once I was off the pain medication. They were always available for my questions. One nurse in particular took nearly half an hour on the phone for me trying to get an ultrasound scheduled. Thank heavens for him--they discovered a blood clot that could have killed me. Another staff member took time during a really busy shift change to sit with me and talk when I was overwhelmed and needed someone to talk to. The staff seemed to enjoy their work. They were pleasant to be around and respectful of my questions and concerns. I can not say enough good things about then. There were two nurse practitioners and one social worker (maybe two, but I think they were in transition) who worked with me. It was a bit difficult to see the social worker/case manager, because she was dealing with so many people. But, when I did get to speak with her, she answered my questions completely and made sure I understood what would be happening. The medical nurse practitioner was fantastic! After my release I was supposed to pick up medication for the blood clot. Because of my situation at home, I was not able to get to the pharmacy before they closed. I called the main desk at ANEW. The nurse who answered was able to get the medical nurse practitioner to call in the prescription to another pharmacy for me. Thanks for her out-of-hours help. The psych nurse practitioner was respectful of my requests. We were able to talk several times and she explained about my medications. I do feel she might have been a bit eager to prescribe medications to help patients, but that is her focus. Overall, although my stay there was not by my choice (and I never was sure exactly where I was), I feel that this stay did fit their purpose, which was to keep me safe. However, it would have been helpful to have some type of therapy while there. If I was there for a diagnosis of suicidal ideation, some therapy before going home would have been helpful. Group discussion meetings, one-on-one sessions, or counseling on how to avoid getting into that situation again would have been very helpful. While I was there the schedule was breakfast, "activities" (which included coloring and word search pages), snacks, more activities, lunch, more activities, more snacks, dinner, and free time with still more snacks. The food was good, and there was always food available outside of mealtime if requested. But, I really didn't need THAT much to eat. While the coloring and word search might have been appropriate for some, it wasn't for me. The activities director did a good job of coming up with activities for us, and I can't fault her. I just wish we would have been able to have some process to learn and practice coping skills rather than coloring pages."
"My dad is in there right now and he has falling twice in one week. I don't recommend anybody putting your family member in there. My mom is pretty upset about the whole situation and so am i"
"I consented to my husband going there just 4 days ago and I’m regretting it already. Things I was told weren’t true from the length of time I was first told, to things the intake coordinator said to a different time given to me from to different staff. The email was the only communication at first. They picked him up in such a hurry at night he was confused didn’t know what was happening and how could I tell him when I found out a couple hours prior and hadn’t even processed it myself. I thought I’d tell him the next day only to be told I can’t visit him due to just 1 case of Covid. And they were making me feel like he’s being held hostage with no one really telling me anything AT FIRST. He’s scared, anxious ( both of us), he gets cold easily and it’s just not what’s best for him. He stands at door waiting on me etc… After 4 days on meds I was told by staff there they would release him if he’s doing good on that med and he is. So after saying all of this they still got a 3 because they’ve been super nice ppl I believe they’re nice to him or I sure pray they are. Not nice to him on this Saturday he tried telling me. CJ just wanted him out of there so said seizure no one here is sure and all her stories are different depending on who she talks with like the doctors and his brother. This part goes towards the end of post but I’m crying sitting with my husband at KU. He is a black and Indian minister and that’s a racist place and hate is a strong word but I have no love for them except 3 ppl one being Irene and if she was there today this would’ve not happened So they’re having a meeting today and hopefully will care more for him and see he’s stable enough to go. So right now it’s 3 but after I get him home in one piece and not sick from being inside all the time etc… then they could get a 4. Thanks for reading my long post: Update he’s coming home and I Thanked them for helping him, getting him back to a good place. I WAS NERVOUS about weekend cause I have. Seeer friends who can tell things(psychic) and we were wanting Monday to get here well this morning CJ said something about the lighting and Andrew getting upset they claim he was agitated and they called to tell me and they drugged him up and sent him to hospital where I sit at his bedside. Doctors here at KU don’t think it was a seizure like CJ said so I don’t know what they did to him but they will pay is all I know God is my witness. No clear answers from them, no call no concern. The docs said if we get him stable does he go back there I take it no right I said HELL NO. I will send a friend to get his stuff or my attorney next week."
"My husband was a patient there for 2 weeks. Every time I visited he had someone else's clothes on. After two weeks there he got very sick and was having trouble breathing. During my visits I noticed it was very cold in the visitation room. He was sent to the hospital due to his difficulty breathing and he had cellulitis in one of his legs. When he was released from the hospital Anew said he could not return since he did not meet their criteria.I didn't understand since there had been no mention if this prior to his being sent to the hospital. He went there in the beginning because he was experiencing major confusion. He is bipolar and I thought his medication was possibly causing confusion. One of the medications they added caused major hallucinations. If they had consulted with me prior to starting the medication I would have told them he could not take it. They immediately stopped that after they told me what happened and I told them he could not take it. They started him on another anxiety medication that seems to be working. I was very disappointed that he could not return to Anew as he was still having some mental issues. I would not recommend this facility and I feel his stay there was a waste of time."
