Reviews of Lakeland Behavioral Health System
"Went here many many years ago and after reading throught the comments nothing has changed. I can't believe they are still open. I witnessed plenty of abuse and neglect. I went to this program over 10 years ago. DONT SEND PEOPLE YOU LOVE HERE."
"The only reason I’m posting this review is because I need closure. This place is hell. I was admitted in 2019 and only stayed for a week but that was enough. This is an outdated review but I feel the responsibility to personally warn each and every single parent that considers sending their child here. If you love and care about your child do not send them here. I was only 12 at the time. Firstly, the moment I arrived I had a bad feeling. I was admitted into the younger adolescent ward. I was 13. These were children from the ages of 6-10. The staff was so negligent. We had about 5 nurses on our unit to supervise 20 kids at this point. They overbooked the unit so badly that I ended up meeting my friend from school in a different city. She was almost 14. We were both teenagers looking after the calmer kids while staff tried to “calm down” the aggressive children. This continued for multiple days until I was finally transferred to the teen unit. It was finally going to get better! Nope, not at all. The staff failed to de-escalate the conflict on the teen unit the entire time I was there. A girl had quite literally been dragged by her hair and thrown into the wall by another patient. She was, assumedly, sent to the ER or transferred facilities and I was sent to the teen ward to take her place. Lucky me. There were constant verbal fights and staff were not only negligent, they fueled the conflicts and belittled the patients. Some staff were truly kind and amazing people. Some. Not most. Instead of sticking to our daily schedule we were constantly being shuffled in and out of rooms or groups to physically remove the few peaceful teens from the rest of the agressive ward. Most of the teens there would join in on the conflict and start fights. It was insane. For some reason, despite all of the fighting on multiple units, the patients were able to eat in the cafeteria. There must have been three to four different units in the cafeteria when, suddenly, someone from another unit started beating one of my fellow unit-patients with a plastic tray. Those things aren’t even allowed in schools anymore because of that exact situation. This is a hospital where they take the strings out of your pants to prevent you from suffocating yourself… Anyways, multiple fights and pure chaos ensued. Imagine 60 teenagers in a cafeteria screaming, shouting, throwing things, throwing slurs, beating each-other up, and running around. I almost immediately ran out of the cafeteria and tried to run away. For all I knew, I was going to be beaten over the head with a tray next. The only reason I didn’t end up fleeing is the lock they have on the front door. Nothing was stopping me from pushing the button at the front desk. Luckily, I was so distraught that I just collapsed and started sobbing instead of continuing my escape plan. A concerned and really kind staff member spoke to me and helped calm me down. She was one of the few okay staff I met during my stay. She worked the front, not the units. Our group therapist after this riot left me in a room with 2 boys alone while she went to de-escalate a fight outside the room. One of the boys was “massaging his thing” in front of me and staring at me. I was appalled and scared, of course. When the therapist entered the room again all she did was tell him to stop. He didn’t. Group continued and so did he. After deciding I was going to hurt myself if I stayed there I talked to my therapist. I was going insane. I’m sensitive to yelling, fighting, and loud noises. I was done. I told my 1-1 therapist what happened and what was going on in the hospital. She told me she would contact HR and demand to discharge me. Thank goodness she saved me from that place. My mom ordered the discharge and I left. It was horrible. I don’t wish it upon my worst enemy. I endured other things there but that is the most relevant and important information I have to relay. Thank you for reading, please avoid this facility like the plague and spread the word."
"I personally stayed here and my advice to anyone is to not go. During my stay I had lot's of panic attacks and was met with being put in a room with feces on the floor. I normally maintain a healthy weight but here I lost 10 lbs in a week. It's very filthy, there was dirt, peeling paint, a roach problem, and gnats everywhere. Staff would say that it was a safe place but they also said they wouldn't protect you. If you want to be stripped against your will then not allowed to contact your family for a day go. If you're a parent you'll struggle to get in contact with any staff. There was a nearly a code blue everyday (Patient not breathing). Patients who were treated horribly were the only kind people there."
"If I had to give 0 stars I would. My daughter was placed at Lakeland for suicidal ideation. She was made to feel as though she was a bad person for having the thoughts she would. My daughter became paralyzed while in the facility. She was taken to the ER after I told them she needed to see a doctor. And was brought back with no mri done. The nurses/staff there forced my daughter to try to stand and she fell causing an abrasion to her shoulder. My daughter was screaming for help to use the restroom because she could not walk, resulting in her being incontinent of bowels. As the nurse told her if she really had to go she would get up and go. They discharged her backside they could not medically handle her as she was a 2 person assist. We brought her to the ER immediately after her discharge, to find out she had a tumor on her spine and had to have back surgery. The communication was horrible from the staff and the nurses would back-peddle when you questioned their actions."
"My son was here for a short while but while he was there he said it felt like prison. He stated the food was gross. The admitting person that called me didn't listen and put wrong information down. My son said he only got to go outside twice. And that there wasn't really anything to do there. He said some staff was nice and some were mean. And when I'd call to talk to him I also got told to call back later before 6. And the sad part is his dad didn't get to talk to him much while he was there cause he dad doesn't get off work till after 6 pm. I'll never admit him there again."
