"My husband and I had the pleasure of attending the delightfully hilarious production of "Death at Downton" a couple of weeks ago. The theatre, a refurbished church built in 1903, is on a smaller side street across from Hwy 136, on the southwest side of Brownville. The structure is mainly white with red trim and has a nice ramp as well as a stairway with matching red railing. There's a small parking lot on the side of the theatre, but people also park along the street in front. We were the first ones inside the theatre that evening, and some of the cast members were there to greet the patrons. I asked if I could take a photo of them, and they were sweet to oblige; in fact, they even stopped to talk with me for a few minutes. I've been a fan of live theatre for many years, so I wanted to get the best seats possible for the show, so I purchased tickets a few months prior; our seats were in the second row on the left side (there's a photo of the view from our seats). We'd never been to the theatre before, so I wasn't sure of the seating setup (good or bad). The theatre is small and I'm not sure how many people it can hold, but judging by the look of it, any seat in the house would have been good. Greeters at the front door handed out "comfort" cushions to put on the folding wooden seats. The chairs are definitely from a bygone era, but they lend to the eclectic quaintness of the place. Before the play, one of the artistic directors came onstage to welcome the guests; it's an intimate theatre setting which seems to be very engaging between audience, cast members, and stage crew. We thoroughly enjoyed the production of "Death at Downton". Most of the cast had dual roles and they did a fantastic job of portraying each of their characters--playing even the most challenging opposite parts. They had a short intermission in between acts, so those who needed a break could purchase bottled water and/or visit the restrooms located behind the theatre in a separate building, (there weren't any soft drinks or snacks available.) After the performance, the theatre has a "sweet" tradition of serving lemonade and cookies during a "meet and greet" time with the actors. The actors lined up for handshakes, photos, and a few hugs from family members. If you're taking a trip through the southeast side of Nebraska, this place is worth a stopover, albeit during the summer months, and the tickets are definitely a great bargain for a live theatre production! We would definitely like to return for another performance sometime in the future."
"Fun and intimate space in a historic town. One of the few repertory theatres left, with a revolving slate of plays and musicals."
"We had a wonderful night of laughs and intrigue. I am always curious to see what this production company will come up with for its theater season. We'll done!"
"Took my wife to see “The Odd Couple”. It was fantastic! The crew members all performed very well along with the supporting staff to make the production happen. I am looking forward to watching more performances here in the future!"
"Fantastic theater! The crew, cast, and the directors were phenomenal! We saw School House Rocks and Artifice on our first trip to Brownville. We can't wait to come back next year and see what they put on in their next season!!"
