"Today was my very first visit with Dr. Fulton. After my name was called the nurse took me back to check my vitals. I felt that something was off, so I decided to compliment her on her easter bunny socks. This was to prevent a transactional encounter but to be more personal. I felt like she was initially just ready for the day to be over like most people are. I understand that and I hoped that the compliment would make her smile and share positivity. Afterward, she stepped out and I waited on Dr. Lori (Lorelie) Fulton. She walked in and immediately asked "So tell me about yourself. What do you do?" I ask, "Are you referring to what I do for work?" She responded, "UHH, YEAHH!!!" (I was expecting a medical-related question, so I asked for clarification on what she meant.) I proceeded to answer her question with excitement. We later discussed the purpose of the referral/visit. During this time, I shared with her a condition I was diagnosed with. I did mention that I did not want to take a particular medicine, however, she did highly recommend I take it. She said, "Well I can't make you take it....." When I stated why I didn't want to take the medicine, her posture and demeanor changed. She started making aggressive and sharp body gestures, clear signs she was upset and annoyed. I attempted to de-escalate the situation by politely waiting for her to finish speaking. I gently asked, "Is something wrong?" Her response was, "Excuse me young lady!? Why would you ask that!?" (I knew by her response everything was not ok) I said, "By your body language you seem upset." She screams, "OH NO! NOO! We are not doing this today!" I asked, "What's wrong?" as I realized that she was getting up to walk out down the hall. I overheard her tell the nurse, "She said I have an attitude..." (referring to me about her). The nurse came in and I was still seated, and I said, "Ma'am I did not say she had an attitude. Is there a supervisor I can speak with?" The nurse responds, "Dr. Fulton is the supervisor." She continues, "I don't believe you and Dr. Fulton will mesh well, and I believe you should be referred to another doctor and we will be declining to see today. We will not charge you for your visit." I'm completely confused at this point. So many thoughts are going through my mind. I went through so much to get there. I live about 40 minutes away and I had taken off of work." I was so upset and there was nothing I could do about it. I was NEVER ugly or rude to anyone there. It's not in my nature to be that way to people. I was not seen today, and I still do not know why she was soo upset."
