Emmett Till Historical Marker Money Road, Greenwood, MS 38930
About the Business
The Emmett Till Historical Marker is a significant institution located on Money Road in Greenwood, Mississippi, United States. It commemorates the tragic story of Emmett Till, a young African American boy who was brutally murdered in 1955. The marker serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in America.
Recently, the Emmett Till Interpretive Center received a generous donation from acclaimed TV producer Shonda Rhimes, which was reported on by Robin Roberts and Good Morning America. This donation will help support the center's important work in educating the public about the legacy of Emmett Till and the civil rights movement.
The center's exhibit about Emmett Till is currently touring the country, thanks to a collaboration between the Emmett Till Interpretive Center, the Emmett Till & Mamie Till-Mobley Institute, the Till family, and the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. This exhibit sheds light on Till's story and its impact on American history, encouraging visitors to reflect on the injustices of the past and work towards a more equitable future.

"And no one cared about this site until we tried to save those doors that Emmett walked through. The crumbling store, abandoned, covered in kudzu. We stopped there several times and wondered why nobody wanted to remember Emmett. Each time we stopped there, we told the story. My friend was angry. He said that he was going to make sure that history would NOT forget Emmett Till. He was going to make sure that the doors would forever stand as a reminder of injustice. He said this each time we drove through Moneypit, Mississippi. We were working in Greenwood for a week. He again mentioned those doors. The Vick's Vaporub porcelain push-pull on one of them. He asked me if I was in. Yep. Every time. Neither of us had grew up in the south. We were from "up north". One from Michigan and one from Ohio. Then, on one oppressive Mississippi summer night, we got them. A year later, they arrested him for stealing those doors. My friend never mentioned me. A true friend. A friend who took a charge to make it right. You did it "Tony"."
"If it wasn't for Emmett Till, this dead-end ghost town wouldn't be on the map. Ironic, considering this town's inhabitants wanted that poor boy dead! Sad!"
"Emmitt Till is a symbol of our American journey. History is so extremely important to who we are as a nation of cultural diversity. Emmitt this is not the path you may have chosen but we shall never forget your importance to our history. God bless your restful soul."
"This was an emotional experience. With all the media surrounding the lie, it is a shame that this boy had to DIE. We need to face the sins of our past and ask, are we doing any better?."
"Worth the drive. The gas station next to the store was preserved well, as if not a day had passed since the incident. The plaque was also in great condition and easy to read (our 4th grader was able to read it) but the store itself where Emmit was accused was COVERED in vines snd hard to pick out from among the trees around it. The road getting to the location was rocky, but worth it. Very impactful to see first hand."
