About the Rohwer Heritage Site
The Rohwer Heritage Site in Tillar, Arkansas, United States is a historical institution dedicated to preserving the memory and stories of the Rohwer incarceration camp, which housed thousands of Japanese Americans during World War II. The site features exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs that explore the impact of the camp on the individuals and families who were unjustly detained there. Visitors can learn about the experiences of the Japanese American community during this dark chapter in American history and reflect on the importance of upholding civil liberties and human rights for all. The Rohwer Heritage Site serves as a solemn reminder of the consequences of fear, prejudice, and discrimination, and aims to promote understanding, empathy, and tolerance in our society today.
Reviews of Rohwer Heritage Site
"It's small and in the middle of nowhere, but the feeling of reverence you feel as you read the monuments is undeniable."
"There were 3 motels in this town. We chose Relax Inn based on the reviews of others. We were pleased with our guided decision. The room was clean and nicely updated. The bed was very comfortable. We had a small refrigerator/freezer and coffee pot. Both the night and morning staff were very friendly and accommodating."
"In spite of the five star review, I must advise you that there is really not much here. But I give high marks to the volunteers who have made this heritage site accessible to the families of the internees and others who are interested in history. The cemetery is maintained, and there are informational signs and audio kiosks where stories are narrated by George Takei. Yes, it's a bit surreal to stand in the middle of a cotton field and hear Mr. Sulu talk about his days behind the barbed wire here. If you come here, you should know there are no facilities. Hit the restroom before you arrive and bring some water if it's a hot day. If it's summer, bring insect repellent. The best feature is the solitude. After soaking up the story of the internees, you can usually enjoy some peace and quiet if you choose to meditate and reflect. There is a bike trail accessible from here if you wish to make it a two-for-one experience. Again, thanks to all those who have worked to preserve this place. It's a story we should never forget."
"We watched "Exploring Arkansas" on PBS and saw an episode about the Rohwer Heritage Site and decided to visit the site. It was very enlightening. This is a part of history too many people have forgotten. We had the opportunity to visit the museum in Mcgehee too. Both were very educational in regard to this history in our nation."
"Not much is left of this historic site but a replica guard tower and a cemetery with some monuments to the victims of the internment camps as well as the brace Japanese-American soldiers who fought for a nation that hated them. It's a place you should stop at and take a moment to realize how far we have come but also how much more we have to work on."
