"Clarksdale has turned into a plastic tourist destination. I have a long personal history with this city and the generational racism ingrained here has never really been overcome. What exists now are entrepreneurs, almost exclusively from elsewhere, who have moved in and are trading on Clarksdale's worldwide reputation for the Blues music of a bygone era. The reality is a coterie of outsiders trying to sell authenticity they neither possess nor really understand. In an overwhelmingly African American town once again carpetbaggers are reaping the rewards. Try Greenville, Vicksburg, even Jackson for real Mississippi."
