Humbug Mountain State Park Port Orford, OR 97465
About the Business
Humbug Mountain State Park, located in Port Orford, Oregon, is one of the Oregon coast's most scenic destinations. The park includes the towering Humbug Mountain, offering breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding forests. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, camping, and picnicking. The park also features a sandy beach beside the Brush Creek estuary, perfect for a relaxing day by the water.
The Oregon Coast Trail passes through the park, providing hikers with stunning ocean views along the way. The park's history dates back to the 1920s, with initial development by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Overnight camping was introduced in 1952, allowing visitors to extend their stay and truly immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area.
The park's name, Humbug Mountain, has an interesting origin, stemming from a misadventure by an exploring party in the 1850s. Despite a forest fire in 1958 that burned part of the park, the mountain's timber was saved thanks to a fortunate change in wind direction. Today, Humbug Mountain State Park remains a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike, offering a peaceful retreat along the Oregon coast."

"Definitely one of our amazing discoveries found along our route! The trail at the lower loop of the campground will give you access to a private beach where a fresh water stream meets the ocean. You’ll find plenty of driftwood and unique rocks. We stopped after a rainstorm in early November and the temp couldn’t have been more perfect. 60 degrees and no wind. What beauty! Definitely a stop worth making!!"
"Definitely one of our favorite State Park Campgrounds! Host Volunteers and Rangers take good care of this park. Fresh berry picking all over, firewood for sale daily at just $5 a bundle and great trails nearby! There's a short trail with direct access to a small/private beach off of the lower loop of the campground. The brush creek runs into the ocean so you have your choice of both fresh and salt water to enjoy. The only downside that we saw was that this beach and campground (especially the lower loop) can get really windy! The lower loop is definitely more busy and populated than the upper loop. Rangers patrol the campground well, so campers seemed to be more respectful than other parks we've been to. Definitely a stop worth making!!"
"We stayed just one night here on a road trip but were very impressed. The campsites and bathrooms were very clean and the Park Rangers Alec and Heather were wonderful. Right after we left they even called us to let us know an expensive item had been left behind, thankfully it wasn’t ours but we were impressed with how thoughtful and thorough their care of the State Park is! The lower loop is fairly close to the road and you do hear the cars driving by, but it wasn’t to loud at night and it was worth it to be closer to the beach access."
"The campground hosts take beautiful care of this place and were so kind and attentive to us even though we pulled in while it was getting dark. We were stopping just for one night while traveling between visits to family and this was a wonderful stop over. Loved the short walk to the beach and the clean restrooms."
"We love Humbug. Every year we stay here for 3-4 nights on our RV trip in June/August. So many memories have been made at this small coastal park. The campground has RV sites with water/electricity and a very clean dump site. RV sites along the mountainside are great and even have trail access. The restrooms are clean, maintained and with large, family restroom/showers. Hot water too. Our family loves the beach access from the campground. It's literally a 5-minute walk to a gorgeous beach and you can even do a bit of river/creek walking along the way. You might see some whales along the coastline here! The Junior-Ranger program is so much fun for kids. Ranger-led hikes are also available. We loved the Fern Trail hike and discovering the vegetation along the way. Humbug trail is a fairly strenuous hike but it's on our list for the kids to do!! The campground is bike-friendly and there is a large meadow to play in. We keep coming back to Humbug and you should give it try, highly recommended!"
