"Update: I have completed the initial course of TMS treatments and a set of additional treatments. Everything about my experience — from first reaching out to Active Path Mental Health to the end of the treatments — has been excellent! It has been a very helpful tool in the managing of my mental health concerns/diagnoses. Individual results will vary, but I highly recommend scheduling a consultation to learn more and see if TMS is a good fit for you. The process of seeking out TMS treatment with Active Path Mental Health felt like a very streamlined, informative, and assuring process. While it takes a short while before beginning treatment, mainly due to getting insurance on board, I felt informed and supported by Active Path Mental Health at every step. They take safety very seriously, and all the staff and medical providers here are highly professional and kind. They were highly accommodating of my time preferences for daily treatments, and the staff make me feel very welcome. I am still early in my treatments, so I will update my review in the near future. However, TMS is highly supported by the research, so I think it is worthwhile for anyone who fits the treatment profile. Overall, I highly recommend Active Path Mental Health for those who are seeking TMS treatment."
"My experience pursuing TMS at Active recovery was awful and traumatizing. After working in healthcare myself for the last ten years, I am appalled by the flippant attitudes, lack of patient advocacy, and total disregard for evidence-based trauma informed care. The frustration began with my mental health assessment with Guadalupe Gabba. She honestly seemed entirely disconnected and uninterested in working in mental health. In my appointment she required me to provide details of my trauma history without any infrastructure or process for supporting the patient after making them recount trauma. At the end of my mental health assessment, she stated "you will get denied but if you had a different insurance provider, you'd get approved easily". After my case was denied the first time, she suggested I pay for TMS out of pocket which would have cost me thousands of dollars, making it seem like she was in it entirely for the money. Pursuing TMS through Active Recovery was a months long terrible experience that made me feel more alone in my depression. At the recommendation of my therapist, I pursued TMS elsewhere, at Sundstrom Clinic. The PMHNP who completed my mental health assessment was supportive and trauma-informed. He did not forced me to unnecessarily re-live my trauma. They resubmitted my insurance request, received a denial, and within one week had the denial overturned through patient advocacy and by requesting a peer to peer review. I completed TMS at Sundstrom last week and my life has been changed. The entire team at Sundstrom was supportive, compassionate, and played a part in saving my life, while Active Recovery pushed me further into depression."
"The Active Recovery center provided me with excellent care throughout the process. Everyone was professional, friendly and caring. If you are considering it, reach out to Active Recovery and they will talk to you about whether the treatment is a good fit for you and what requirements your insurance may need you to meet before they’ll cover it. I passionately recommend this treatment to anyone who is suffering with depression."
"Update 02/06/22: I sought treatment through Greenbrook TMS after my negative experience with Active Recovery TMS. Their team facilitated getting my application approved by my insurance within a month's time and I was able to start my treatment in late December. I now have less than two weeks to go and it's been a life changer for me. It's also criminal the amount of red tape people must go through when seeking this treatment. Original Review: I worked with Active Recovery TMS' intake team for over a month while trying to get my paper work sorted and criteria met, so that my health insurance provider would approve the cost for this treatment. I had to jump through hoops and sign multiple release of authorization forms for them to acquire my medical records, and that still wasn't sufficient enough as I had to (on more than one occasion) personally reach out to my former/current health care providers and facilitate the process for them. Once all my health records had finally been acquired I was asked to come in for an evaluation with the company's program director. This was the last step prior to them submitting my paperwork to my health insurance provider. When scheduling the appointment the week prior, I was asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding my current mental state. This was a form I had already completed around the same time I had first contacted Active Recovery TMS about their services; yet, I was instructed to complete it again as they informed me that the first questionnaire had now become outdated. So I did and brought it with me to my appointment—only to have the program director then inform me that my score on the latest questionnaire wasn't sufficient to meet my insurance company's criteria to cover the cost of treatment. When I had initially reached out to them I was in a deteriorated mental state and had scored higher on that questionnaire for my treatment to get approved. Yet, when I filled it out the second time I wasn't in as bad of a mental state as before. It was my intention to be transparent and honest about my mental health at any given point during my interaction with them. The program director advised me to wait and complete the questionnaire again once my symptoms had worsened. So the day after the appointment my mental health took a turn for the worse and I completed the questionnaire again (now for a third time). Here's Active Recovery TMS' response after I submitted that third form to them: "I simply do not feel there is a means of immediately moving forward with this PHQ-9 score of 15 this morning following the score of 8 just yesterday afternoon during your in-person evaluation. ...from a moral-legal standpoint I cannot imagine we are able to work with such an immediate higher result. The sudden improvement would present as being at odds with the notes from yesterday's thorough evaluation." To the Active Recovery TMS team: I cannot time when my mental health deteriorates in order to cater it to your liking. That second form I had submitted to your program director (who by the way, did not retain a copy of it for your records and handed it back to me) was completed and dated SIX DAYS PRIOR to my appointment with him. Your office claimed that the change in score occurred within a day of each other, yet your program director failed to recognize that the second and third forms were completed/dated nearly a week apart. After patiently waiting over a month for Active Recovery TMS to submit my application to my health insurance provider, I decided to stop pursuing treatment through them out of the frustration they put me through. I was fortunate enough to have a health plan that would have covered the cost of this treatment, yet they didn't even submit my paperwork to them because they were preoccupied in putting up red flags and prolonging the process. I'm left now without the help I had originally sought them for, and not to mention the unnecessary stress and suffering they put me through as well."
"The expertise and kindness of Dr. Horey and every member of the Active Recovery team is exceptional! I walked into the office in a deep depression that had lasted 7 months, with no relief from various medications. I left feeling as though my life had been given back to me. I have returned to all the things I love to do with energy and joy! I am forever grateful to Active Recovery TMS and the amazing people who staff the office. I give them my highest recommendation."
