Chalmette Battlefield

Chalmette Battlefield, located at 1 Battlefield Road in Chalmette, Louisiana, is a historic park that commemorates the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. This battle, which took place just downriver from New Orleans, was a significant victory for the United States in the War of 1812. The battlefield serves as a reminder of American democracy triumphing over European aristocracy.

Visitors can learn about the War of 1812 through films and exhibits at the visitor center, where kids can also participate in the Junior Ranger program. The park store offers a variety of items related to the period, including books, music, and children's books. Admission to the park is free, and there are various events and programs available for visitors to enjoy.

If the Creole Queen excursion boat is docked at the battlefield, visitors can also enjoy a unique experience on the water. For more information on the park's calendar of events, exhibits, and accessibility information, visitors can visit the park's website.

"The fort is very interesting. There are lots of plaquards explaining what happened there. It's a nice self- guided tour that you can enjoy at your own pace."

"This was part of a steamboat cruise. They had a guide tell about the battle there, which was cool. They have an obelisk and canons with a small museum. I'm not sure why they had a fake dilapidated mansion... they would be better served tearing it down imo...especially once I learned it has nothing to do with anything."

"Wonderful National Park and Cemetery. Don't skip the visitor center. Lovely Park Rangers. Good short films and artifacts. Walk and drive options. Can get a glimpse of the Mississippi River from grounds. A nice thing to do for a short trip outside the city on New Orleans."

"We arrived here by boat. There is not a whole lot to see, though still worth a look. From what I saw, the park can be experienced in under an hour with all major sights seen. The historical impact of this site makes it a must for those wanting to appreciate the early development and struggles that set up New Orleans as the wildly unique place it is today."

"Great place for a quick visit, the history of the Battle of New Orleans right on the edge of the Mississippi River is fascinating. The farmhouse is not tourable, but is interesting to read about. Ended up on sight for a musket firing demonstration, which was so cool to see the logistics of firing and reloading, they even let us hold a non-working one. Definitely not a national park that requires a multi-day visit, but worth the afternoon for sure!"
