"No organization and rude employees. You have to self advocate! I’ve never been to any doctor, therapist or anything in the medical field where appointment times were not given and it’s on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis, regardless if it’s the first appointment or not. After a week with no call to schedule my first appointment I had to call and ask why. They seem to not know where my paperwork was and the call took over 20 minutes to figure out the misunderstanding between the Lufkin office and the Jasper office. I haven’t even made it to my first “appointment” yet and feel very hesitant to do so because of the lack of care from anyone at the front."
"I dealt with Burke for over two years, by way of trying to get help for my son, who is ASD. I have never seen an organization do so much while doing so little. Waited for over a year to get a formal evaluation and diagnosis, despite already having a diagnosis from elsewhere. In the interim, they were willing to give him medications and nothing else (for reference, best practice is accepted to be behavioral therapy first, and only resorting to drug therapy if necessary- wish I had known this, because they won't tell you). As soon as they evaluated him, and gave the same diagnosis that we already had, they were very big on pushing "casework" meetings and "consumer benefits" meetings...which basically consist of different people asking you to provide the same information each time, so that they can "help" you apply for things like Medicaid and SSI (he was already covered by private insurance). They literally did nothing else except continue appointments for prescriptions and waste time asking questions about things like household income. It wasn't until I filed a formal complaint through their compliance department that they enrolled him in "skills training", which is very entry-level type stuff, the sort of things that you will learn within fifteen minutes of reading about ASD. Still tried it for awhile, then inquired about actual therapy (ABT or even the less-preferred CBT), and was told that they do not have anyone on staff who is qualified to provide any sort of therapy for autism. This is information that I should have been provided up front, before we wasted so much time going through their intake process and frequent appointments. I'm curious how they are listed as a LIDDA (local intellectual and developmental disability authority) when they don't even offer services related to it. I'm also curious how much public funding they receive as a LIDDA while failing to provide those services. Overall, it just seems like shady business practice, and you'd likely be better served just going to a specialist if that's an option for you."
"I have been with the Burke Center for 3 years. The social workers are excellent and the other staff are reasonable. However the Psychiatrist Dr. Larned is not at all helpful. I got work with a company and now need to have papers signed by a Psychiatrist and before he even saw the papers he said he would not sign them. I am stable and on a low dose of Zyprexa, 5 mg. I am now looking for a Psychiatrist who will be invested in my mental health and well being. If you just need a psychiatrist to prescribe medication and not give a hoot about you, then Burke Mental Health is the place for you, but if you need a Psychiatrist who will take the time to get to know you and sign papers for employment then look else where. I feel like I have wasted three years of my life now. John Smith is not my real name, in case Burke tries to claim they don't have a record of me on file."
"After having a psychotic break, they have been helping me get back on track with medication and helpful guidance."
"The receptionists are short on patience. They are also not very friendly. Long wait."
