"Tim did an amazing job as docent; he had wonderful stories to tell about President Tyler, and he shows you the beautiful antiques in the house, and recommends a book to read about Julia Gardiner Tyler, and he tell you about the offspring (a grandson founded ChemTree is Ashland, VA and made his employees who had been with him longer than a decade into millionaires). Plus I had a chance to talk with Tim a little after the tour - he has his own fascinating story (he and his family lived in Iran for four years during the fall of the Shah and the Revolution aftermath). Totally recommend the tour, and as more are scheduled in late spring, it may be worthwhile to ask when Tim is scheduled as a docent."
"Beautiful property and informative brochure. It was off season so couldn't go inside but did run into someone outside that was more than happy to answer questions and chat with us. Very glad we made the stop!"
"First, I want to say that this plantation is beautiful and had quite a bit to look at. That being said I wish there was more to offer in sharing the history of President Tyler’s former residence. You receive a self guided brochure at the parking area and follow the numbers at each part of the property. Panels should be installed that really dive into the history of the property and maybe someone out and about during visiting hours to talk to the guests. When my kids and I were visiting, we almost felt like we were trespassing because no one was out (we came during visiting hours.). I love learning about President Tyler and I’m glad I had a chance to stop by and see this beautiful property"
"We visited the home for our 10th wedding anniversary and we cannot recommend the private tour enough!! Tim gave us a tour of the house and grounds that we really enjoyed; we listened to his stories for over 2 hours!! When we told him we collect magnets from every President’s home, he searched hard to find something to commemorate our journey. Didn’t find a magnet but he came up with a decorative spoon, for free as an anniversary gift! We can’t recommend this enough"
"When able I travel for history and food. I have been to the homes, castles and palaces of kings, queens and American presidents. With its beautiful trees and unique architecture, Sherwood Forest Plantation offers an opportunity to experience American history when private citizens were deeply engrossed in the world of economic servitude, while on the verge of tearing themselves apart. Don't let the English name escape you."
