About Us

Located at 103 East Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Colonial Williamsburg Magazine is a historic tourist attraction that is currently closed for restoration. The Magazine was built in 1715 to store arms and ammunition for the defense of the colony, and it played a significant role in the events leading up to the American Revolution. The restoration project, scheduled to be completed in 2025, will coincide with the anniversary of the 1775 gunpowder incident that took place at the Magazine.
One of the ongoing research projects at Colonial Williamsburg is focused on solving the riddle of the Powder Magazine's perimeter wall, shedding new light on the building's history. The last restoration of the Magazine was done in 1938, making it 80 years since the walls were last studied in detail.
Visitors can support the restoration efforts by renewing their membership with a donation of $50 or more, which comes with special benefits. Stay tuned for more information on the Magazine's reopening to the public and explore the rich history of this important colonial landmark.

"We visited the Magazine for the musket demonstration, which was held outside the walls. There is a plaque outside explaining it's history and importance. Unfortunately, we never saw it open any time we passed it during our multi-day visit. Looking at others pictures, it is open sometimes, so if you want to go inside, be sure to check the schedule."
"The Magazine (armory) in Colonial Williamsburg is one of the original buildings, constructed in 1715 at 306 years old, it stands the test of time and is a true window into historic Williamsburgs link to our revolution. It became the seat of confrontation prior to The Revolutionary War, as it was here the weaponry was stored for defense of the colony, weapons in which the British and Royal governor secretly stole away with the stockpile of gunpowder. The looming structure is about midway down the main street so its impossible to miss. The living historians inside provide a great insight to the use and history of the magazine, and, you'll see an awesome display of period weapons. A must stop ..."
"The whole Colonial Williamsburg area lets you take a step back in time and realize how far we've developed and how lucky we are in certain cases. The actors do a great job in creating an environment that's fun and educational. There's plenty to do everywhere you look and it's easy to get lost for an entire day finding interesting places here."
"The history is wonderful. There is nothing like going out, eating a great meal with good company and then walking Colonial Williamsburg. It's a tradition in my family. There's a reminiscent comforting feel as you walk along the street. The sound of horses' hooves clip clopping along happily pulling carriages, the smell of homemade soaps and leather works as you take in the beauty of the gardens. The construction of the homes is fascinating. I sadly have never bought tickets to go inside the places, but I assure you that I will my next visit. You must visit an take a stroll down by the Governor's Palace. Wonderful experience every time."
