"Didn't do the house tour but walked out to the fort. The path is very country but the destination worth the half mile trek. Just neat to see 414-year old earthworks dug by the Jamestown settlers under the direction of Capt. Smith himself."
"Incredibly preserved house, great interpreter (Tom) and a mostly unknown piece of the earliest english settlement history of North America. John Smith, Chief Powhatan, John Rolfe & Pocahontas and their child Thomas Rolfe all rolled into a neat package. A must visit for history lovers. We have been 3 times and each time discover new. Go, you will not be disappointed. Friendly and knowledgeable guides are there to tell the story."
"Every old mansion is a museum of its own and its story adds details to the greater story of the region. In this case, it's details of John Smith. He built this house and planned to build a retreat on a bluff overlooking the James River behind this house. The fort was never finished. This house stands as part of his legacy. It is yet another glimpse into the private life of a colonial figure. The tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly and helpful."
"Smith's Fort Plantation is one of the most fascinating historical places in Virginia! It is certainly one of the oldest with the earthworks dating back to an attempt to build a fort by Captain John Smith in 1609. The property (before the house was built) was part of Pocahontas' dowry upon her marriage to John Rolfe. Take a tour from the amazing tour guide to learn the rest of this properties history. The period pieces in this house are particularly old and unique! Not to be missed if you love history!"
"Beautiful home and immediate property! Bummed to see a few piles of old tires and concrete in the woods, but other than that, AMAZING!! The trail to the remaining "fort" was beautiful!"
