About the Beaver Dam Creek Battlefield
Beaver Dam Creek Battlefield, located at 7423 Cold Harbor Road in Mechanicsville, Virginia, is a historic park and tourist attraction that commemorates the Battle of Mechanicsville. Also known as the Battle of Ellerson's Mill, this significant Civil War battle took place on June 26 and played a pivotal role in the rise of Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army in Virginia.
The battlefield is a reminder of the intense fighting that occurred as Confederate forces, led by Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, attempted to outflank and defeat Union troops under Fitz John Porter. The strategic location of Beaver Dam Creek, with its swampy terrain and defensive obstacles, provided a challenging battleground for both sides.
Visitors to the battlefield can explore the historic site, which is now part of the Richmond National Battlefield Park. The park preserves 365 acres of the battlefield, allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought there. A short walking trail crosses the creek, giving visitors a glimpse into the intense fighting that took place on both sides.
The Battle of Mechanicsville marked a significant moment in the Civil War, with both Union and Confederate forces claiming victories in their own ways. The battlefield serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought there, and the impact of the battle on the course of the war.

Reviews of Beaver Dam Creek Battlefield
"If you love history and quiet places. But please be mindful and careful. It doesn't need to be destroyed."
"This is a historical location & that's about it. There's a scenic bridge over the creek & about 10 yards of trail before you end up on a street in the neighborhood next door. Heavily wooded with bit of grassy area & bank access if you want to get your toes wet. Small parking area (limited to 1 hour) & no trash cans."
"Small little out of the way area. Somewhat private. Creek was mostly dried up as it was late summer when visiting. Has a bridge over the creek. Nice area for photos."
"There’s nothing really interesting about this place so don’t go out of your way to stop here. It’s basically just a walking trail with two history signs about the area. It’s owned by the National Parks Service, but I don’t know where the passport stamp is located."
"Hiking trails and history combined. Very nice place for a short walk."
