Reviews
"This is a beautiful historic town I suggest anyone around to come and step away from daily life to see what nature has to offer, you also have a chance to ride beside the train"
"If you are a fan of history then you’ll enjoy this spot. It was neat to stroll around, drive over the bridge into town, and read the roadside info signage. The visitor center was closed for the off season while we were there."
"Cool side trip when visiting the New River Gorge National Park. Highlights include a walking history tour, excellent views of the river and a roadside waterfall. Take time to drive over to Stone Cliff too for amazing scenery and camping by the water."
"This is a super small yet interesting ghost town to visit on your trip to the New River park! It was worth the trip I think as it was not too far out of our way and we spent ~30 min walking around and watching trains."
"A visit to the Thurmond Historic District is highly recommended when visiting the New River Gorge, even if you're not a history buff. A walking tour through the remains of the town is led by a ranger a couple of times each week at 11 am (Tu & Th). We timed our visit to coincide with one and thought it was very interesting, entertaining, and helpful. Try to take advantage of this if you can. Thurmond is a classic example of an early boom coal town due to the arrival of the railway and its bust when the railroad improved and left them behind. The remaining buildings and old photographs tell a story of what transpired there for a brief period of history. It's a great place to visit while at the New River Gorge NP, especially for a rest day or a rainy one like ours."
