McCormick Farm/Shenandoah Valley Agriculture Research & Extension Center
About the Business
McCormick Farm/Shenandoah Valley Agriculture Research & Extension Center is a museum located at 128 Cyrus McCormick Circle in Raphine, Virginia, United States. This institution is home to the historic McCormick Grist Mill, which will be in operation during Mill Day, celebrating the 191st anniversary of the invention of the McCormick Reaper. The center encompasses over 900 acres of land in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, focusing on livestock production, forages, forestry, and wood lot management. Visitors can explore various programs such as beef cattle breeding, sheep development, and small-scale forestry demonstrations. The center also features a National Historic Landmark memorial area dedicated to Cyrus McCormick and his family's contributions to agriculture. With state-of-the-art facilities and ongoing research projects, the institution aims to promote sustainable agriculture and serve as a leader in livestock and forage-based research in the region. Join us for the upcoming Field Day on August 3, 2022, for a free tour of the farm and learn more about our programs.

"Beautiful site that includes picnic tables under shade trees. Two buildings housing antique reaper equipment and other artifacts. One building is a old blacksmith shop. Old slave quarters onsite that houses bathrooms now. There is a good sized pond on the grounds as well. I hear that oftentimes ducks and geese are in the pond. Walking on uneven ground and uneven steps is required to get to the buildings. An interpretive walking trail is inside that I did not access today. There is a seven minute audio- visual video that can be watched and listened to while in one of the buildings. Everything here is free! Quite educational."

"Neat little wayside museum off Interstate 81. A few historical displays and a small walking path. Great place to get out and stretch your legs. Bathrooms available. Nice spot to picnic."

"We got there late in the afternoon and many of the buildings were already closed. Still, the area is beautiful and we enjoyed exploring a bit."

"Magical little stop close to 81. Tons of quick food options nearby and lots of picnic areas and tables in the shade. Pond is great and full of turtles and fish. Friendly barn cat is pleased with attention and children. Take the short walk along the feeder creek to the mill."
