"A stone monument where a Confederate general fell in a skirmish early in the war. The geography of the area has been modified by "progress" but the core space is adequately preserved to make the battle description understood. Ashby was described by his commander as a "partisan officer" in style, and though from a slaveowning background he at least once offered to fight a dual in defense of a northern guest bullied by southerners on politics. Perhaps rather than seeing this as a monument to slavery, we can see it as a warning not to be too sure of our own virtue without realistic self-examination."
