Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve - Virginia Outdoors Foundation
About the Business
The Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve, located in Broad Run, Virginia, is a 2,350-acre park that serves as a living laboratory and open-air museum in the easternmost mountains of Virginia. This preserve, owned and managed by the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, protects a diverse range of plant and animal species, as well as regionally important cultural history sites.
Visitors to the preserve can explore the various plant communities and historic features through a network of trails that showcase the ecology and history of the property. From mountain laurel-covered ridges to historic cemeteries and quarry entrenchments from the American Civil War, there is much to discover and learn about at Bull Run Mountains.
The preserve is also a hub for scientific research, with staff actively collecting data on plant and animal species, public visitation, and trail use. This data-driven approach helps to inform decisions on balancing public use with the preservation of the natural ecosystem.

"It seems likely they’re encouraging us to leave one-star ratings. There’s something suspicious happening. It used to be a welcoming place, but then they closed the summit, followed by banning dogs. What’s next, banning humans? There’s definitely a motive behind these changes, and honestly, it’s not even that appealing anymore."
"Nice trails, easy parking, and wildlife. Went on a solo hike on a wet Saturday morning. Saw no other humans, which was pleasant. Saw a number of deer, squirrels, and one turtle. I hiked the green loop, and Strava said it was about 4 miles total. It was easy and flat a lot of the way with some occasional elevations. Trails are marked well, making it easy to get around without worrying if I was on the right path."
"Such a beautiful and peaceful place, I come here to unwind and relax, thank you to the people who run this place, I appreciate very much what you do."
"Visited on a Sunday. There was a good amount of parking and clear maps. The trail was well marked and not too long. It had really nice usage of going over the various streams and takes you near the creek, which was nice to see and listen to."
"A nestled area in Haymarket Virginia. The preserve offers a few hiking trails or limited difficulty and more of a saunter. The trails are all under a beautiful tree canopy with streams and wildlife abound. This trail is good for kids or a quick walk. The overlook is no longer available."
