Reviews
"It is sobering to realize how many soldiers were killed and wounded in the area around the Reno monument. Farmer Daniel Wise's cabin was located about 50 yards west of the present monument. According to author Stephen W. Sears in his 1983 book "Landscape Turned Red", after the Confederate withdrawal towards Sharpsburg, Union troops passed through the Confederate positions here in pursuit. Some Federal troops remained to begin burial of Confederate dead left behind in the area surrounding Wise's property. In an effort to cut short this disagreeable task, some of the Federal burial details decided to deposit the remaining dead in Daniel Wise's well. When Wise realized that his well was now ruined, he bargained with the Federal soldiers to let him finish putting the dead into his well for $1 per body. They agreed. And, according to Sears' book, once full, Wise sealed his well and earned $60 from the Federals. I mention this because I suspect that, sadly, those 60+ dead Confederates are likely still interred in Wise's well somewhere in the vicinity of the Jesse Reno monument. UPDATE: I recently learned that apparently the dead in Wise's well were collected and reinterred in a Confederate cemetery in the late 1800's. Hopefully, this is the case."
"This was an interesting place to visit. There were signs at the site that described the battle where General Reno was killed. There is also a trail to a monument for the Confederate General Garland who also was killed during the battle."
"Beautiful little stop. Well kept and an important site for sure"
"Nice monument to honor the sacrifice made by General Reno to help save the Union. Also interesting background on the Battle of South Mountain that led to an important turning point in the Maryland campaign."
"Several monuments to civil War, one of few places hand to hand combat took place. Applachian Trail trailhead here for hike up Lambs Knoll or G.W monument both 3 miles one way."
