About the Business
The 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment Monument is located on the south side of Bloody Lane in Keedysville, Maryland. This monument was dedicated in 1903 and commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of the Ohio 8th Regiment during the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Sawyer, the regiment forded Antietam Creek, formed a line of battle, and took the crest of a hill at bayonet point. Despite running out of supplies and having to scavenge ammunition and muskets from the dead and wounded, the regiment charged Bloody Lane, capturing around 300 prisoners. Out of the 341 soldiers engaged, 162 were killed or wounded in the four-hour battle. This monument serves as a reminder of the courage and determination displayed by the Ohio 8th Regiment during one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.
