About the Friends of Skamokawa/River Life Interpretive Center
Friends of Skamokawa/River Life Interpretive Center is a tourist attraction located in the historic town of Skamokawa Valley, Washington. The center aims to promote and enhance the Skamokawa Historic District by interpreting its natural and human history. Visitors can explore historical photos, listen to knowledgeable docents, and learn about the once-bustling river town of Skamokawa. The center offers a panoramic view of the Columbia River from the bell tower, which can be reached by climbing 88 steps. Skamokawa was listed on the National Register as a National Historic District in 1976 and is one of the few surviving examples of a small water-based community along the lower Columbia River. The village features houses and buildings facing the water, connected by boardwalks, and was once known as "Little Venice." The area was settled in the 1860s by pioneers drawn to its abundant natural resources and opportunities for farming. Today, the community still thrives on commercial fishing, logging, and small-scale farming, as well as tourism activities like kayaking, fishing, and biking. The River Life Interpretive Center also includes a gift shop, bookstore, self-guided exhibits, and a bell tower with stunning views. Visitors can order items online for home delivery and become supporting members to receive discounts on books and selected items. The center celebrates 35 years as a non-profit organization and offers online videos of presentations and exhibits on their Youtube channel.

Reviews of Friends of Skamokawa/River Life Interpretive Center
"Small town appeal. Stayed at friend's house that I built cabinets for. Shopped at the convenience store and visited the museum. Nice place to unwind. Walked on beach also."
"Enjoyed learning about the local history, they also had a temporary exhibition of a couple of local creameries. The gift shop had a wide variety of goods to choose from."
"We really enjoyed visiting here. They have a beautiful building with excellent historical and local information. Elements shared how life was over 100 years ago in the area. Also, I was able to ring the bell in the bell tower- very exciting."
"Having driven by it many times, I'm so glad that I was finally able to stop and check it out. That have lots of local history on display in this historical old schoolhouse, and thay also get visiting exhibits periodically. The volunteer on duty during our visit was very knowledgeable and happy to spend time with us. You can even climb the tower of the old schoolhouse and ring the bell if you are so inclined. (And a fun gift shop, too!)"
"CHARMING restored 1894 Schoolhouse now serving as a Riverlife Interpretive Center, Bookstore, Crafts, and special events venue. Three cheers to the Friends of Skamokawa. They are open from 1-4pm Thursday through Sunday (March-December)."
