About the San Juan Island National Historical Park
San Juan Island National Historical Park, located at 4668 Cattle Point Road in Friday Harbor, Washington, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. This park offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, including saltwater shores, quiet woodlands, and the chance to witness orca whales in their natural habitat. Additionally, visitors can explore one of the last remaining native prairies in the Puget Sound/Northern Straits region.
The park also holds historical significance, as it was the site of a territorial dispute between the United States and Great Britain in 1859, which nearly led to a war over possession of the island. This conflict, famously known as the "Pig War," was sparked by the death of a pig.
While exploring the park, visitors can learn about the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and respecting the environment and wildlife. The park is home to a variety of animals, including foxes, deer, and marine mammals, and visitors are encouraged to observe them from a distance to ensure their well-being.
If you visit the park when visitor centers are closed, you can still learn about the history and nature of San Juan Island by downloading the NPS app. Don't miss the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of San Juan Island National Historical Park.

Reviews of San Juan Island National Historical Park
"Beautiful place nice walking trail smooth and stroller friendly"
"Great visitor center explaining US and British conflict over the international border during the Pig War in mid 1800s. Contains American Camp with white fences and some buildings and signage. Beautiful prairie grass, Cattle Pass, Gulf of Juan da Fuca views. Lots of native flora and fauna including a red fox that was hunting voles."
"Beautiful trails and not too many visitors! The history trail with interp signs is very informative and a fun read/walk. Rare native grassland habitat that is so wonderful to hear swaying in the wind."
"This was a great park. We saw several foxes, bald eagles, seals, and sea lions. There are plenty of different trails to hike and a nice visitor center. The park is well maintained and in a stunning location. The old camp was nicer than any infantry duty station I ever had."
"This is a great park with beaches and a nearby lighthouse. The rolling plains are home to wild foxes which are worth the visit to see. If you want to relax and enjoy being at peace/chill in nature, I highly recommend visiting. The park is pet friendly and no pass appeared to be required."
