Reviews of Gloria Dei Old Swedes Episcopal Church
"Gloria Dei Old Swedes Episcopal Church, nestled in the Southwark neighborhood of Philadelphia, is a historic gem with roots stretching back to the Swedish settlers of the 17th century. Built between 1698 and 1700, it stands as the oldest church in Pennsylvania and is a testament to the city’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Known locally as Old Swedes’, the church has been a member of the Episcopal Church since 1845, welcoming all to its congregation regardless of their spiritual journey. The church’s architecture displays an English vernacular style, combining elements of Medieval and Gothic designs, which is evident in its robust structure and the addition of a tower around 1733. Today, Gloria Dei continues to serve as a place of worship and a beacon of historical significance, inviting visitors to explore its past and experience its tranquil presence."
"We first visited this historic gem a couple years ago for a family member's wedding and then a baptism last year. Firstly, the people of the congregation are absolutely welcoming to everyone. I am a recovering catholic and never felt at home as I did during that mass. The church is a historical gem and the Pastor was so happy to share the history with me. I won't add any pictures as they just wouldn't do justice to the beauty of the church and grounds. Whether you are looking for some historic enjoyment or joining a congregation that truly seems to welcome everyone, don't miss a chance to visit."
"Very beautiful location! Some of my ancestors went here and one of my ancestors, Sven Gunnarsson, owned the land that the church is built on! I went to see the St. Lucia Fest on December 9th, and the performers, both young and old, did an exceptional job telling the stories of, and singing songs about, Swedish daily life and religious culture during the Christmas season in the 19th Century. The Reverend of Gloria Dei was also very nice to everyone, and he gave a great introduction and conclusion that both dealt with our need to be lights in a dark world. The St. Erik's Fair was also a great experience with Swedish food and gifts. Everyone was friendly and treated everyone like family. I will be back to this place for sure! Note: For the respect of the performers and to keep the church dark for the St. Lucia performance, no pictures were taken of the event itself."
"Really nice place to take a walk or let your dog run around. Has a lot of charm. It’s interesting to stroll through the graves and read the old headstones. In the front of the church is a brick walk lined with cherry blossoms. Check it out at the end of March to see them in full bloom. We were just a little too late but still got to enjoy a few blooms. I would love to visit this church for service sometime."
"One of the most peaceful and lovely churches in Philadelphia. It would be perfect if there wasn’t the constant hum of traffic noise from both sides of the church but if you can concentrate on the beautiful structures and grounds and merciful breezes you may be able to block out the noise. The church itself is quaint and well-maintained with slim pews and a modest alter. The grounds are quite large with historic gravesites and a few benches for sitting in quiet contemplation. The grounds seem to be quite safe with a daycare on site and frequent visitors strolling throughout the grounds. The trees are substantial and seemingly very old with plenty of birds chirping and whistling. Close to perfection."
