Reviews of Carrie Furnace Tour
"Fascinating guided tour. You will learn the history of the steel industry, including how steel is made, why Pittsburgh was the ideal location, and a day in the life of the steel workers. Highly recommend!"
"A truly one of a kind experience!! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and I’d recommend this tour to anyone interested in the history of Pittsburgh"
"Went here for a Combustion Festival. Had food trucks, vendors and various shows and activities for kids. Tours sold out fast but it was a great time and experience. The fireworks at the end were spectacular."
"It's Pittsburgh, Steel City. Visit the Carrie blast furnaces. They made iron from iron ore, limestone, and coke and transported the molten iron over a dedicated "hot metal bridge" across the river to the Homestead plant that turned it into steel. But perhaps I give details you should learn on the tour. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. Tour takes 2 hrs or a little more. These blast furnaces were in operation when I was a kid. I didn't see them then, and I'm sure the plant didn't give any tours that let people walk 10' away from the furnaces. ~3000 degrees F inside, ~300 F outside. Molten iron flowing through a trough in the floor into a special railroad tanker car for transport across the river. The size of the plant is impressive. Now I will look for a video documentary of an old steel plant in operation and I can better imagine the hard, dangerous work people used to have to do. 9/2023 update: finally added photos that I transferred from my old camera."
"Did the walking tour and it was absolutely AMAZING! I have always wanted to go an I finally got my chance. It's not just beautiful, but you can feel the energy from the iron workers years ago still as you're walking through. I wish I lived closer but I would definitely volunteer and participate if I could. 10/10 highly recommend!"
