"Sits beautifully in the downtown Tryon , few tables in the small plaza parking behind the statue, shaded area. Nice tribute for sure to her there is a mural of her down the road behind the gas station."
"I said rock What's the matter with you, rock? Don't you see I need you, rock? -Nina Simone, Sinnerman (1965) This small plaza in Nina Simone's home town is a tribute to the singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist. Who hasn't heard of Nina Simone? Surely you're aware of the music she released to support civil rights, including the song "Mississippi Goddam" that was in response to the murder of Medgar Evers. Three stars because this great and troubled woman deserves more. There is a statue of her that's quite nice but the "local attractions" kiosk? Tacky! She deserves better."
"I recognize and acknowledge Misha's concerns. I hope if Nina was still with us she would take comfort that Tryon is becoming culturally rich and no longer the old south. I do agree the plaza is rather tacky (mall directory reminisce) ; however, I appreciate the recognition Nina is given. Being from a different generation I had never heard of Nina before I moved here, but now she is one of the first I proudly mention when I tell people where I'm (now) from."
"Great tribute to Nina Simone for her contributions musically and her activisim."
