Reviews of Burlington Breakwater
"We have pickup flag football on the breakwater. If you fall in the water you have to drown yourself no exceptions."
"Following the creation of the Champlain Canal, linking Lake Champlain to the Hudson River, in 1823, and the creation of the Chambly Canal, linking the St. Lawrence River and Lake Champlain, in 1843, Burlington experienced a boom in lumber transportation from Canada through to the wider United States. Burlington’s position as the third-largest lumber port in the country lead to an unsurprising increase in vessels arriving in its harbor. When the challenging winds from the south and northwest began to create perilous conditions for the vessels, a federal grant of $29,000 allowed for the construction of a 1000ft breakwater between 1837 and 1854. Extended once more in 1867, a separate, detached breakwater was built 200ft beyond the original breakwater. One of the most historic events in the history of the breakwater came some years after the completion of the detached breakwater when, in 1876, the schooner ‘General Butler’ left the Isle La Motte fell foul of a rogue wave during a storm and had its wheel ripped from the rudder post. Eventually, the vessel came aground on the breakwater, where the captain was able to safely transport the passengers onto the breakwater before being rescued by the lighthouse keeper who rowed the survivors to shore. During the last two decades, improvements and reinforcements have been made to the Burlington Breakwater to the value of an approximate $3 million to ensure that it remains functional, enabling locals and visitors to safely use its waters for transport, leisure, and work."
"Does a great job of breaking water. Also pleasing to feast your eyes upon."
