Reviews of Spruce
"After Thrive took over from Graystar, this place has gone downhill. Thrive is here to squize every penny out of the building and it shows - Safety is a big problem: the 'secure' garage became very scary (tens of cars being broken in, drag races, people hanging out). - The 'secure' storage units been broken into twice within two weeks. Zero support from management. - Bike storage was broken into. - The building camera system doesn't work and Thrive is keeping quiet about it. - Our neigbours having ongoing smell issues from the garbage chute. - Sink and drain are gurgeling loud and often stink of sewer. - Elevators are constant being broken. - Doggy run on the roof reeks of piss and poo (recently there have been issues with dog tape-worms). - Rent is increasingly going up and service is going down. Once you're month-to-month (+$200) expected a 6-month notice with a +$700 rent increase. - Monthly billing issues with charges being added for no reasons and takes weeks/months to get this corrected. You have to check you monthly invoice all the time for mistakes."
"I've been a tenant here nearly 4 years, and this year will be my last. When I first moved to Spruce, the property was under management by Greystar and was then bought out by Thrive Communities. Greystar wasn't perfect or good by any means, but living under Thrive is like having to live in a building owned by a team of monkeys whose sole purpose is to mess your life up. Since they took over, they (1) got rid of the community forum, the only way for tenants to communicate with each other, (2) got rid of the ability to reserve amenity spaces (and took away the community printer in the conference room), (3) got rid of the security guard, resulting in multiple break-ins to our "secured" garage and "secured" storage lockers on a "secured" floor, (4) jacked up rents so high that it's pricing out people who have lived here twice as long as I have - among a number of other things that other tenants have listed in these reviews (sewage problems, general building neglect, broken elevators, etc.). Do not waste your time with this place. Do not listen to the Thrive representative who may or may not reply to this review. This company does NOT care about you, nor do they have any intention of making this place an actual community - they only want your money, and more of it. Having spoken to other tenants, many of us are simply sick of this place and the people who run it. I’ll update this review once my lease is up in case they decide to turn things around. But in the mean time, I would 100% avoid renting here."
"EDIT 2/2024 After 4 years here, unfortunately things have continued to go down hill with Thrive. Elevators are broken often, and now the garage has been broken into multiple times. We don’t have a security guard anymore, which I think is part of the problem. I’m just so disappointed in the community I used to take a lot of pride in living in has been run into the ground by management that appear apathetic to everything. Everything that was a great perk is gone - no more free printing every month, no more reasonable lease renewals, the office only throws get togethers during 9-5 work hours, and now we have the garage that I have parked in for 4 years suddenly become a major safety issue. I won’t be renewing and it sucks because the location is amazing but that is all it has going for it at this time. If you are still on the fence about renting, I would try to catch someone who lives here when they are coming in and out of the building and ask their honest opinion about it first. I did that and got mostly positive reviews, so I moved in without hesitation. They took away the group chat feature the building had (another of the many cons the past few years) so we made our own and it’s only comments on how things have gotten worse overall. Original Comment We have been here going on 2 years now and we love the location and amenities. When we first inquired about our unit, Stephen responded promptly, sent us pictures, and we locked in right away because we loved that responsiveness. We feel like we’re definitely paying a fair price for the unit we’re in, and even though we’re paying for 2 parking spots we like the convenience of knowing we won’t have to fight for street parking every night (we would lose anyway to what feels like maybe half the complex working from home). Neighbors that I have run into are very friendly, I love that so many people own dogs, and the insulation is a little crazy in that I can’t hear my neighbors on the sides of us at all. I do hear my upstairs ones if they stomp around, but thankfully that isn’t very often. There is also a gym that is 24 hours and a community/business room/community printer you can use, which was awesome when we were really starting to get stir crazy from the pandemic. The office management has unfortunately had a bit of turnover from when we arrived, which is the main reason we’ve been bummed and give the complex overall 4 stars. We miss Stephen, but appreciate the new people introducing themselves and trying to fix the gate in a timely matter if it breaks, or do audits for the storage units/cars, and putting on virtual neighbor events. I would like it if they communicated more if construction/other major events are happening that maybe blocks our main way out or something. I can always find myself, but it’s just a nice courtsey to give residents a heads up. This is also a minor thing, but I wish we had an updated stove and dish washer. We have a nice microwave, washer/dryer and oven, but the stove and washed are old enough (which is weird because the complex is fairly new) that it would be nice if they were updated to look more modern like the rest of the apartment."
"Do not live here. Staff is completely unable to keep the building safe. We’ve had break-ins to cars in the secure garage, our storage lockers are being robbed, there are arrests happening in the buildings. Please read this before staff deletes this review. Do not live here if you value safety and your property. Also since this will get deleted I’ll repost every time it does."
"This is our first apartment in a big city and overall we are very pleased! There were a couple small bumps in the process, but everything has been alright since we got the keys. The staff have been friendly and helpful and our questions have been answered promptly. The unit was very clean and spacious and the amenities are excellent!"
