Reviews of Peace First Early Learning Center
"I’m very disappointed with our experience at peace and with our interactions with their director Virginia. We started at Peace August 2023. In November our son started reporting his teacher Bailey was being unkind to him. He has been in care since he was an infant and used to love going. It was an absolute battle to get him to attend. I was trying to find a specific incident to bring forward to their director Virginia but then learned (from our son) Bailey no longer worked there. This was never communicated to the parents. When I emailed Virginia to bring up our concerns her response was as follows: “Thank you for letting me know! I cannot discuss as to why Bailey is no longer working with us, but I do appreciate you reaching out and letting me know!” No apology or acknowledgment that our son was purposely injured at the hands of their staff. Fast forward to January we receive an email out of the blue regarding our son. Virginia stated she had received numerous emails from parents regarding our son and his hyperactivity (for reference he was 3). I replied back and included his amazing teacher McKenzie asking what behaviors, when this was happening, and how was it being handled. It was the first time we had heard there were potential issues with our son interacting with his peers. His teacher quickly responded that she believed there was a misunderstanding because she wasn’t having any issues with our child. The incident that had caused the email was from our son playing with another child and they both feel down. The other child received a rug burn and this was not reported to the parents. Because the parents had also had issues with the previous staff Bailey injuring their child they were very concerned. Instead of Virginia following up with this parent’s concerns and discussing with the classroom teacher she caused us anxiety that our child had behavior issues and that he needed therapy. She did email us an apology: “First of all, I would like to apologize for my email yesterday. I jumped the gun and instead of conferring with McKenzie beforehand, I was just going off the info I received from another parent via multiple emails that came through while I was out on vacation.” but again never a phone call to discuss. Our last interaction with the school was this week. Our son broke his femur mid January sledding. We have kept him out of care until cleared by his provider. He had been cleared and we were working with the school for his return. After femur fractures it is not uncommon for children to limp for up to a year. He is also to young to use crutches so he is using a walker. We provided a stroller for them to use to take him the block to reach the basement play area. He is independent with toileting and walking. The daycare refused to let him return fill time and accommodate his need for an assistive device. This is a direct violation of ADA title 3. I’m absolutely astonished they as a church cannot accommodate a child in a walker. When we looked at other childcare in the area none of them were concerned about our son’s use of the walker. I do want to acknowledge our son’s teacher McKenzie is absolutely amazing. If it wasn't for her we would have left back in November. She is kind hearted and does a wonderful job interacting with the children. Our son will miss her dearly."
"My children have been going here for nearly a year and they absolutely love it! My children have majorly excelled academically and they love their teachers! The staff is wonderful and on top of things. I recommend this care facility to everyone I know who has children. Top notch quality!"
"My child was constantly bullied. There were other children that got picked on as well. The final straw was when another child threw something and it hit my child in the face. When I inquired the director about the incident and why I hadn't been called and informed of the situation, she had no idea it had even happened. This was the worst of multiple incidents like this. Whenever I came to pick up my child, the caretakers in charge would be either on their phone or completely checked out and the room would be in complete chaos. All of these issues were brought to the director's attention by both myself and my husband and we never saw any positive changes."
"Our toddler daughter, Teagan, went to Peace Learning for the last eight months, and our first grader went to the after school program a few days a week just to have extra play time with friends (both are very social/energetic). Our older kids were lucky enough to attend a few really great childcare centers in Portland, so our bar was pretty high when we were touring centers. Overall, we were very happy with Peace Learning Center. Peace located in a house owned by Peace Lutheran Church, and the babes/todds are in a daylight basement. The staff have been really fantastic (with the exception of one teacher they had for just a short while...). Thankfully, they have a lot of teachers who have been there for a long time (asking about the turnover rate is one of the most important questions when researching childcare). The Director, Holly, is fantastic and everything is very well-organized and cheerful. The lead teachers are very experienced and obviously care for the kids. They are well-structured with music, art and walks to the library when it isn't pouring. They do a great job of potty training, and know how to do it effectively/compassionately. The curriculum is religiously based, and the kids celebrate the holidays and learn stories from the bible. At age two, it's all about obeying your parents and loving your neighbors/friends. There is a very working class vibe, compared to the professional families we were used to in Portland (i.e. parents working at DQ). My only negative experience has been seeing a few parents drop their kids off with very little compassion for the separation anxiety they feel. Even though, sometimes I know that the "best" thing you can is walk away, it's hard to witness distraught kids sulking every morning after their parents literally drop them off. Thankfully, the staff have made up for any lack of compassion that I've seen. Lastly, my only real complaint is that they use styrofoam/plastic disposable dishes. It's very typical in Astoria, but it took me aback when I first saw it being used (after Teagan was happily settled into "school"). We've just disenrolled her for the summer, and very likely will have her attend our church's Grace Preschool in the fall, which is Montesorri based. Teagan will certainly miss her friends/teachers. Thank you Peace, Darcy (and Teagan) Darcy@yippiechicks"
