The Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trailhead is a must-visit destination located at 320 Elizabeth Brady Road in Hillsborough, North Carolina, United States. This unique institution offers visitors a glimpse into the natural and cultural history of the area through its walking trail. Originally built as a half-mile horse track by Julian S. Carr for Occoneechee Farms, the track was later expanded and used by NASCAR. This 44-acre site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
As you explore the four miles of trail along the banks of the Eno River, you will encounter the only surviving dirt speedway from NASCAR's inaugural 1949 season. The 1-mile oval Occoneechee/Orange Speedway was a hub of activity from 1948-1968, attracting top stock car drivers and thousands of spectators. Today, this outdoor site offers a range of activities for individual hikers, joggers, and sports enthusiasts to enjoy.
The institution is also supported by the Historic Speedway Group (HSG), a dedicated volunteer group that works to maintain the grounds and preserve the legacy of the Occoneechee-Orange Speedway. This site holds a significant place in the histories of NASCAR and Hillsborough, making it a must-see destination for anyone interested in the rich history of the area.

Reviews
"Very cool experience to walk the track and have the Eno River so close. They have some old cars around the track to look at and the flag stand, grandstand, concession and spotter station, and ticket booth. The sign at the spectator area is loaded with the history of this former NASCAR track. Some of the founding fathers of the sport raced here. The park is dog friendly (on a leash at all times) and has lots of trails ands areas to roam for the family. There’s also a trail that leads to the Ayr Mount plantation across the river."
"The more you look, the more you see. Easy to imagine the cars, the noise, the cheering crowds. And it's a nice stroll, too."
"Seems like a fun place to walk near h town. It was cold and rainy when we went but still a nice place to go. We started from weaver st but probably should have parked at the entrance and done the full loop"
"Nice, level walking trail with historic significance. Quite popular with local residents. Pet-friendly outdoor destination with free parking and a couple picnic tables. This future state park will likely benefit from site improvements and additional signage as it becomes part of Eno River State Park"
"This trail is not for beginners do not go alone you will get lost and have to backtrack at least for my experience I did! Please please please remember where you're going cuz you will end up having to walk all the way back around! But overall it was a good walk!"
