"Historical spot with a small plaque."
"wish u had a better view/access to the waters Stede was captured on or at least a map at the monument showing where exactly Stede’s “revenge/royal james” was careened before the battle to take the pirates began. southport is cute, needs more restaurants!"
"This monument is for the Gentleman Pirate Captain Major Stede Bonnet. This was his place of capture after he had got his pardon from the Governor. He had to go back to piracy due to Blackbeard double crossing him. His story is very interesting and he actually should have made it home but life dealt him too many blows. My picture is a friend reenacting and telling Bonnets story."
"Hear ye hear ye, now presenting, the Brigand of Barbados, the Cream of the Caribbean, the Gentleman Pirate!"
"** This is a monument at the side of the road. You pull over get out read the plaque ** This is were the hideout of The Gentleman Stede Bonnet was. It is also the site of The Battle of Cape Fear River (The Battle of the Sandbars) in 1719 in which he was captured. Standing here was neat knowing what I know about that Battle. Not to mention the fact that it is now land and no longer a "river with a tide" This is what the plaque reads. Stede Bonnet, the "Gentleman Pirate", used the mouth of this creek as a hideout for his vessel, the "Royal James", formerly called "Revenge". Here, on September 26, 1718, the great "Battle of the Sand Burs" was fought between the pirates and the men sent to capture them under the command of Col William Rhett aboard the "Henry" and "Sea Nymph". After a twenty-four hour battle there were 19 men killed, 23 wounded, and Bonnet, with the remains of his pirate crew, surrendered. On November 8, 1718, twenty-nine of the pirates were hanged in Charleston, SC. A few weeks later, holding a cluster of flowers in his mangled hands, Gentleman Steele Bonnet met the same fate on the gallows. This part of the Cape Fear was a favorite meeting-place for pirates, including the notorious Blackbeard and Mark anne Blythe, the woman buccaneer."
