About the North Carolina Rural Heritage Center
The North Carolina Rural Heritage Center, located at 13021 X Way Road in Laurinburg, North Carolina, celebrates the rich historical and cultural heritage of Scotland County and the surrounding areas. The Center includes the John Blue House, the Heritage Village, the Carolinas Indian Museum, and the Agriculture & History Museum.
The John Blue House, a rare example of Steamboat Gothic architecture, serves as the centerpiece of the NC Rural Heritage Center. The house, over 130 years old, is currently undergoing structural repairs, but the grounds and museums remain open to the public.
The Heritage Village, nestled in a grove of pecan trees, offers a glimpse of rural life in the late 1800s with homesteads, a barn, and a cotton gin from Scotland County. The village includes a general store, creating a charming and authentic setting.
The Museum of Agricultural and History explores agricultural technology and rural life in the late 19th century, while the Carolinas Indian Museum showcases the heritage and culture of Indian tribes in the region.
Admission to the museums and grounds is always free, and visitors are encouraged to park in the Heritage Center Parking Lot. Whether you plan to tour the museums, the Blue House, or the Heritage Village, the North Carolina Rural Heritage Center offers a unique and educational experience for all.

Reviews of North Carolina Rural Heritage Center
"This historical site is a real treasure for those interested in American history. We were driving by and decided to stop and check it out. The main hse interior was closed due to maintenance but there is plenty to see on the grounds! Each site has a posted phone number you can call for automated information on that structure. We will be returning soon to spend more time!"
"A unique example of Steamboat Gothic architecture, the John Blue House provides a glimpse into the past of the rural Carolinas. The home features 12 exterior doors, each with its own stained glass light above. The house has nine fireplaces and rare double circular porches. The surrounding grounds include a grove of pecan trees and a collection of structures that tell the story of a different time in the region. These structures include, three authentic log cabins, a restored pre-Civil War cotton gin, and a restored country store"
"Great weather, lots of different food, Jim Quick and Coastline for entertainment, cloggers, dancers, storytelling and variety music. Lots of fun for all ages. Old tractors, antique cars, old timey games for the children and lots more!!! Great day in the 'Burg!!!"
"Passed by on the way home and had to stop. I love old houses and structures. Gorgeous house and neat cabins and other old buildings around the land. Wasn't open inside. Not sure if you need to call to get a tour or if they're open certain times of the year. But definitely worth the stop."
"Great place for a day trip!! We came to visit the Indian Museum with the Boy Scout Troop 11 out of Goldsboro, NC. We are studying Indian Lore and thought it would be a great place to get started. The Indian section of Museum is excellent. It's a small section in the front of the building. There are artifacts from all around the country to see here. Some of the artifacts are very rare and difficult to see anywhere else. The museum is very carefully curated. There is a phone tour you can take while walking around where you call a number and a guided tour will tell you information about various items as you walk through. The most impressive item to me was the authentic 300 year old dug out canoe they recovered from a swamp and put in the museum. I am only giving four stars on the rating though because while there was a museum attendant on staff, he was not very helpful or attentive while we were there so we were pretty much on our own. So be prepared to look a lot of stuff up on your own or use that phone tour I was just talking about. The museum has bathrooms, (but they need to be cleaned well, another reason for the four star rating), and is well air conditioned. Everything is well spaced out and easy to walk through. Our troop didn't visit the rest of the museum, but from what I saw it looked impressive. We took the opportunity to visit the John Blue house across the street and if come here to visit, you should too!"
