Indian Mills Historical Society
About the Business
The Indian Mills Historical Society, located at 105 Willow Grove Road in Shamong, New Jersey, is dedicated to preserving and educating the public about the rich history of Indian Mills and the surrounding areas. Founded in 1973 by local residents, the society has grown in membership and now includes a diverse cross-section of the community.
Indian Mills, once the site of the first Indian Reservation known as Brotherton, has a fascinating history that includes milling operations and the production of iron for the industrial age. The area continues to be a strong farming community, supplying cranberries and blueberries for the world's consumption.
The IMHS collects and displays historic artifacts such as arrowheads, documents, photographs, and farming implements. The society also works to document and preserve historical buildings in the area, such as Red Men's Hall.
One of the main events hosted by IMHS is Atsion Day, held twice a year in May and October. Vendors are welcome to set up and sell their goods at the event, which attracts visitors from near and far.
Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, providing members and interested individuals with the opportunity to discuss and learn more about the history of Indian Mills.
