Burrowes Mansion Museum

The Burrowes Mansion Museum, located at 94 Main Street in Matawan, New Jersey, is a historic institution that offers a glimpse into the early Georgian architecture of Monmouth County. Originally built in 1723 as Bowne Manor by John Bowne III, the mansion was later purchased by John Burrowes Sr., a prominent grain merchant, in 1769. The house consists of two structures, the original house and an addition that was once a separate dwelling.

The Burrowes Mansion played a significant role in local and state history during the Revolutionary War, with John Burrowes Jr. organizing the local militia and serving in the Continental Army. The mansion was the site of a famous skirmish between Patriots and Loyalist forces in 1778.

The museum, operated by the Matawan Historical Society, showcases period rooms, antiques, and local memorabilia, including eighteenth and nineteenth century furniture. Special exhibits and mini-displays highlight key historical events in the area.

Visitors can explore the museum on the first and third Sundays of the month from March through December, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Group tours and school visits can be arranged in advance.
