Reviews of 1803 House, Emmaus, PA
"The Ehrenhardt House This federal-style farmhouse was built by Jacob Ehrenhardt, Jr. in 1803. His father Jacob Ehrenhardt and Sebastian Knauss are recognized as the founders of Emmaus, donating land for the new Moravian "congregational village", and arranging for preachers from the nearby Bethlehem church. The new congregation was organized in 1747, and by 1759 the closed Moravian settlement that would become Emmaus had been surveyed, and the first house built. In 1782 Jacob, Jr. enlisted in the Northampton County Militia, and for this act was excluded from the church. He was accepted back after returning from the Revolution, and built this home for his wife Susanna and their four daughters. He was at times a shoemaker, a farmer, and a tavern keeper. The house was continuously occupied into the 1950's, and was purchased and donated to the Borough of Emmaus by Robert and Ardath Rodale. The house has since been restored by the Friends of the 1803 House, and placed on the National Register of Historic Places."
