Reviews of Sur La Table
"I have not taken a cooking class at Sur la Table or anywhere before attending the tour of Spain. I came with a date and it was an interesting night; an experience for sure. If you’ve read salt fat acid heat or on food and cooking and know how to not cut your fingers off; this class is NOT for you. What went well? - I’ve bought lots of stuff from the store before for myself and others and the store was very nice with a wide variety of product as you’d expect. 5/5 - The staff was supper helpful. 5/5 - The cooking class was the chef and 2 support staff and they were both AMAZING. Lin was everywhere, she has like 10 hands. 7/5 - We got right into cooking from the jump. Chef joked around a bit and we started. 5/5 - The recipe was missing ingredients and the chef had to come add some to bring all our stuff together, a good teachable moment. What didn’t go well? - I blame an equal share of this on me and the company, I should have done more research and read reviews. BUT the website explicitly says you’ll be sharing a workstation and equipment in groups of four. HOWEVER, 48 hours before; after the cancellation window, they send an email saying you’ll be sharing food as well. This defeats 99.9% of the class and makes this a $0 value add. Instead of learning to cook anything you are arranged in a random order to start and if you’re not on the skillet you basically get to watch some other people cook. I’ve gotten better value from youTube. Basically Save your money. - The food was inedible. I feel bad, I told my date not to eat a huge lunch figuring we’d be making a lot of food. But the food was so over spiced and the chef happened to walk by and just add a little bit more for good measure; I couldn’t eat it. She powered through, as the French say, hunger is the best sauce? - This is a cooking “class” or so I thought which would mean you’re experimenting and trying to push understanding. Ha, not here, just follow the recipe, and the chef but there is 0 time to ask questions as he’s running around checking on the 5 groups. He tried but you can’t have 1 chef, 14 students and 2 hours and get anything meaningful from him. He did try a little but Masterclass is a better value. - After 1.5 hrs of cooking which could have easily been 45 min, we got to eat, standing up in the kitchen. Wasn’t an issue for me I didn’t eat but watching everyone else was funny. Weird setup. - I know chefs like to add lots of fat and salt to everything so it tastes better, but my station wasn’t about that life. The chef went hard on adding LOTS of oil and salt to everything. Again I get it but for me, I’d never cook this way so again just not super useful. If you are new to cooking it might be a good class. You do have a chef there to make sure you don’t burn down your house and the food was eaten by most people. For the $200 or so for 2 hours I’d say go shop, set some candles out and follow a YouTube. You’ll be done faster, it’ll taste better and you’ll actually get to cook everything. Even if it’s a complete failure, you’ll have had the hand on experience of failing together."
"This review is for the on-site cooking class. I've only been to it once so I can't reflect all classes offered there, but in overall it was quite enjoyable. Instructions weren't too clear and we found it slightly chaotic, but we still managed to finish everything in time by putting little bits of info collected with the rest of the group. Menus were quite tasty and it was convenient to purchase necessary utensils from the store to remake at home. I noticed that classes are teamed up in 4's, and wondering if there're classes teamed up in 2's apart from couple's night. Would go more often if there are."
"I recently took a French Pastry class. I enjoyed the class, the pastries were excellent. My complaint is that we were never given the recipe for the dough we made. When I asked I was told it would be e-mailed in 2 to 3 days. I called a week after the class and was told the head person was gone for a few days but was back and I would receive the recipe soon. I’m still waiting. I much preferred my previous classes when we given printed copies. Easy to follow and could make notes as we went."
"The staff is great! When I walked into this store, I felt extremely welcomed. They have so many products and tools that are very necessary for the kitchen and home. I really like that this place gives cooking classes! If you are looking for a good spresso machine, they show you how to make coffee in those machines and give you samples. That was a great experience!"
"We did a cooking class and it was fantastic! We learned a lot, Chef Harry (and the whole staff really) was great, and the food was INSANE! He knew exactly how to bring out the best flavor of each ingredient to create two pasta dishes that were out of this world!"
