Reviews of Boxer
"Came in looking for some good ramen on a cold day, saw this spot had solid ratings and looked good so figured I would indulge on a windy portland evening. While the layout is nice, the lighting is a bit dark and it was so dead inside I did get the vibe I was eating at a library, less so a ramen joint (tho this is no fault of the restaurant..just a quiet Tuesday evening). I ordered a ramen bowl and got my order quite quick (tho again it was dead so itd be weird if it took a while tbh). The bowl looked great visually, with plenty of green onion, pork belly slices, and well seasoned broth. However, upon closer inspection of the hard boiled egg, I found that it broke apart and turned to gooey yolk the mili-second my chopstick even so slightly caressed the white. Maybe some like a barely poached egg in their ramen...but nah not me fam, I'm on the 6-8 second boiling side, not the quick dip and toss into a ramen bowl as what was essentially a raw egg /: Regardless, I ate the bowl, the noodles were solid and the pork was very rich. But what followed was less than ideal...stomach pains a plenty along with what most often accompanies that (ya know)...While everyone has different reactions to food, I rarely react this strongly and have a pretty tough stomach overall...but today was an exception. My main point is that while visually it looked good and flavor was decent...the egg was raw and the end result made its way back to the toilet in a rather unconventional way. Here's hoping I just got a bad batch but id look elsewhere for ramen bowls for the time being. As Dayum drops says, Boxers was indeed NOT 'pickle popping on a handstand'..."
"This review is based on the Cedar Hills location, but I assume the recipe is the same across locations and that’s what I’m reviewing. Not the traditional ramen flavor I was looking for. Apparently if you want it to taste like legit soul comforting ramen you need to ask them to leave out the mayu. The broth and meat both had a smokey taste to it. The meat pieces were not your traditionally rolled chashu meat either. It was just sliced pieces of meat that were tough and not enough fat. I swear they put the meat in a smoker by the way it tasted. Which is fine I guess if you’re looking for an American twist on ramen… The egg dissolved in my soup. No creamy yolk… after just breaking apart my egg in half and lightly stirring my bowl was enough to make the egg white almost completely disappear. I was also given my check when my sake bottle was still 3/4 full. It felt rushed even though there were three tables open around us and it was only 7pm."
"Love the vibes here, so airy and bright. Great service, offered the specials and recommendations. Ramen is so good, especially the yellow curry. Cucumber salad is fresh and delicious. The spicy edamame is sweet and spicy, very delicious. Very reasonable prices for good quality food. Definitely going back again."
"Excellent spot in a very vibey corner of PDX. We stopped in with some friends and all loved the experiences. Atmosphere was bright and cozy, and the food was just excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed a yuzu lychee punch drink (non alcoholic), the tots + pork belly, and a couple bowls of tonkotsu ramen. Wow. All of it was just delicious and a perfect warm meal on these chilly fall evenings. Parking was rough though - the area is just full of awesome food joints and it meant a lot of folks hunting for parking spots. We circled the block a couple times and waited 5-10 min before we were able to snag a spot. Worth it, just be patient! We visit Portland regularly and will certainly keep this place on the list of favorites."
