Reviews of U:Don Fresh Japanese Noodle Station – Capitol Hill
"We tried the one at University Ave before, and we wanted to try the Capitol One. Parking was a nightmare on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Foos was good and reasonable priced. We ordered a large niku udon with a side of kikuni/ braised pork and several side dish. The pork was huge at $7. Everything tasted good. Just wish parking wasn't that horrible."
"Ordered the kitsune udon topped with green onions and wakame, with a couple sides of shrimp tempura. The soup had great flavor to it, but the noodles were a bit firm for my liking - I prefer a slightly softer and chewier mouth feel (mochi-mochi, in Japanese). The fried shrimp also was slightly disappointing in that a heavy western-style batter was used, rather than the fluffy and crisp Japanese tempura batter that I'm accustomed to. The quality was still quite good, though. The experience was greatly enhanced when we asked for some shichimi spice powder to add to the soup, as the sesame, orange rind, cayenne pepper, and several other flavorful ingredients add a pleasurable dimension to the udon soup. I highly recommend trying some shichimi if you haven't yet and aren't highly sensitive to spicy foods."
"Solid udon - I always go with the Udon Nuki. Delicious broth, noodles, and meat. Some solid sides and no line make this an easy place when you just want something good and easy. Parking is a pain, but with a little patience you can find a spot nearby."
"U:Don is a traditional udon shop where you can order your noodles separately and pick out the different pieces of tempura that you like a la carte. We ordered the zaru (cold) udon and (hot) niku udon. For tempura we got the karaage, green beans, potato croquette, and shrimp. The udon both come with a side of ginger, wasabi, and green onion. You can request more for a potential extra surcharge. The hot niku udon was easily the best. The meat was sliced thin and soaked up the flavor of the broth wonderfully. The cold dipping broth for the zaru soba wasn't bad, but wasn't the best that I've had. The udon noodles themselves were chewy and cooked perfectly. All of the tempura were amazing. My personal favorites were the shrimp and potato croquette which had tiny pieces of sweet corn that added a great pop of sweetness. Overall, I was extremely satisfied with my visit to U:Don. The prices are pretty affordable while the portion sizes are still fairly large. Combined with the fact that you can select your favorite tempura a la carte makes U:Don a stable spot in my book."
"The food was delicious! It was my first time, it’s affordable and fast. It’s convenient if you are in a rush. I like how they have a wide variety of options from: soup, dip or sauce. And then a wide variety of flavors"
