Reviews of Safeway
"The store is beautiful because it’s new. The customer service, however, is pretty lackluster. Store associates, at least the ones that congregate near the self-checkout lanes, routinely and audibly speak poorly about customers. I have never been greeted, thanked, or asked if I needed help by any associate. This is not terribly important but it does create an unfriendly environment. Speaking of negative atmospheres, on five different occasions, the store manager or closing shift leader, I presume, has gone on the intercom to address customers as “Safeway shoppers and Safeway shoplifters”, and then berates the latter group before announcing that the store will be closing soon. While somewhat humorous, it’s a pretty flippant attitude for a store leader to have and does further alienate honest shoppers from returning; I never look forward going there. I understand that shoplifting is a problem here given its proximity to the university campus, but it would be nice if the solutions they implemented didn’t hinder the customer’s shopping experience. It would be great if they could bring back hand baskets and not treat every customer that walks through their doors like suspected shoplifter. One time, the security guard prevented customers from wearing their book bags but provided no safe way to store them. Also, the prices here are insane compared to QFC and Trader Joe’s and, as you can see, there’s nothing that justifies the price hike."
"It was an exhausting visit to say the least. It was late, I get it. I asked for liquor, but, appearantly they didn't want to get it because all I got was an "it's closed." He was just being lazy. Then, the carts don't leave the store. Um, that's what a cart is for. I could see a half block radius or something. So, do they have a policy to help handicap customers who can't carry all their stuff to their cars? I needed a fork for the pasta salad I bought from the deli. It's cool if you don't have them, but that's all I needed to know. "We don't have forks was all I got out of the disgruntled closing associate. He lied. The security guard got a fork from the back of the deli. So, at least the security guard helped me, but otherwise all I heard was a bunch of yelling at me to get out of the store. Since I don't need to come here, I won't."
"What drops this Safeway is the level of customer service and policy-based unwelcome feeling. The layout and structure of the store is far superior to the one it replaced, and i couldn't wait for it to reopen, as I'm a block away. That said, this video from December 2 demonstrates how ridiculous the compelled self-checkout policy has gotten. If you have more than one person on the floor (you had six) capable of checking out customers, they should be at the counters relieving this bottleneck. This should NEVER happen. To drive this point further home, one phrase I should NEVER hear from a floor manager or clerk is " I don't have time" when I need assistance retrieving an item, and that's what I got from your tall, pony-tailed gentleman this past Thursday. Your milk door was broken, so the 2% wasn't visible. Clerk couldn't find it, so he asked manager. I myself actually saw it was moved over, but pushed back so it was unreachable. It just required a pole or stick to push the product down to be visible. Your guy was like, "I don't have time for that." Time for what? To do something other than stand your lazy butt around? All you were doing was standing around self checkout WATCHING patrons, like everyone else. I come to expect this after 7, but there were no checkout lines open at 4:30 despite plenty of personnel. I'll still patronize, but only if I'm in a pinch. I'll take the bus to QFC or walk extra blocks to Trader Joe's because they value their customers enough to not try to extract their labor as well as their money."
"This Safeway is great. It has a covered outdoor eating area right off the deli entrance. This is one of the most clean Safeways I've ever been in. If you're here from another state or country, you know it's impossible to find a public restroom in Seattle, but this Safeway boasts 2 extra large public restrooms for people in need. Overall 5 stars their customer service has always been top notch, on top of a clean store and covered outdoor eating area makes me wish I lived in the university district."
"Well stocked and beautiful! The renovations have done this Safeway justice, never have I been so impressed with a Safeway in my life. Truly a wonder to watch the opening of a long awaited full grocery store (Target doesn't count). I've often wished for a grocery store like this in UDistrict. The parking garage is convenient though a bit tight. I will be coming back regularly, cannot say enough good things about this Safeway. The layout of the store is a bit inconvenient but has everything you need while being compact and easy to maneuver. Can't wait to watch this store flourish."
