"Everyone with a pet needs pet insurance. I have been with Trupanion for years and they never disappoint. There are no hidden “but if’s”. They pay what they say they will pay according to your plan, without hesitation. Approval and payment ate immediate. My dog just had his spleen removed and a slew of tests. They paid most of these bills we could not have afforded without insurance."

"Trupanion has become increasingly difficult to work with. Submitting receipts from Chewy or online retailers have been sent back multiple times. Unfortunately, I have a mixed breed dog who has increased allergies and found out that he is allergic to everything and will now need to be on a prescription food that they will only partially cover for the first 2 months. Since I have had the policy it has increased each year substantially. Today when calling I was told it’s because of the “economy” and if I want them to be able to cover my claims then they need to increase rates!! I fully understand that the economy is changing but at the same time being a pet parent he is like my child and want him to feel healthy and live the best dog life that he can!! Lastly talking to the manager she was not at all empathetic and when I asked additional questions to policy coverage she kept reading verbatim what the policy stated while a baby was crying on the background. Not happy with Trupanion but now stuck as I have a dog with a preexisting condition!!"

"I am honestly disgusted with how Trupanion's service has been lately. I had never had a problem with them (having submitted multiple claims and had no issues with coverage) prior to October 2023. In Oct '23, we had a mild scare with one of our cats and took her to her primary vet the next day on an urgent care basis. It turns out she had a simple infection that resolved with a short course of antibiotics. I submitted my claim, as I have done multiple times before, only for it to be denied on the grounds of a pre-existing condition. To my knowledge, she didn't have any pre-existing conditions. This was traced back to a one-off vet visit for annual vaccinations in 2021 where I mentioned that she had coughed a few times to that veterinarian. She hadn't coughed in over two years. Our primary vet helped us submit an appeals form, which is still being processed, by the way. But just this year, I took my other cat to the vet because I had a sneaking suspicion he had a dental issue, and it turns out that I was right. He is 7.5 years old. I have owned him his entire life. He has been to multiple vets in several states. I have always been aware of the high incidence of dental disease in pets and have always asked about his dental health at vet visit - how does his mouth look, does he need a cleaning, etc. I have been told that he was not due for one yet because his teeth looked great. Cut to this year when he needs a single tooth extracted since it had started to resorb but had stopped halfway, causing him a great deal of pain (feline tooth resorption, what fun!). Trupanion is denying coverage. I am submitting ANOTHER appeal when my first one hasn't even been processed yet. And the real kicker is: I am a veterinary industry professional myself. I used to work in ER, and I have been asked by thousands of owners throughout my career about pet insurance. Historically, I had always recommended Trupanion. I massively regret doing so now. I hope that I did not doom thousands of pets to subpar coverage and thousands of owners to unneeded financial stress. So if you're researching pet insurance right now and you come across this review, do not get Trupanion - go with a competitor like Nationwide, Embrace, etc. Trupanion's high rating is from the service they used to provide, not for whatever this new garbage system/new policy is for handling claims. I used to work alongside Trupanion with submitting claims and records on behalf of clients so I can tell you the kind of stellar service that they are capable of providing, and I can tell you that they do not provide that now and likely never will again unless their corporate backpedals whatever idiotic decisions some executive made. If I wasn't trapped into my policies due to the pre-existing condition my male cat DOES have, I would switching to a competitor right now. "No lifetime policy limit" doesn't mean anything when they refuse to cover conditions that should be covered."

"This company was my first choice back when pet insurance was still evolving. The company was new. They were offering deals for signing up, things such as your premium will never go up for the life of your policy (that didn't last long). There used to be a sliding scale the customer could set, and it would adjust the monthly rate on Trupanion's website, but now they lock you in and deny lowering once raised. They explained why, and it was less than convincing why they did this. I tried to use the insurance a few times in the beginning when I submitted a claim, but they would be denied for whatever reason. The claim process was confusing and lacked explanation. During the last days of my pets life, the paperwork I sent in did get compensated up to a percentage. The deductible had been met, but somehow, when I sent in the remaining paperwork, the refund was less because somehow I was told my deductible had not been met, and my return was way less. Even though the paperwork prior to that showed the deductible was met. Honestly, I was so thrilled to be finished with this company. I did call to see what insurance would be, for comparison to other pet insurance, for my kitten and they were trying to sell me the most expensive policy possible, claiming that when animals are younger they tend to get hurt more often than when they get older. Never mind, I had never had any of my animals in for illness until they were older. She told me I had to do a lower deductible to start because I couldn't lower my deductible once it had been raised. These people clearly have hit the greedy button. So much so that they sent me a sympathy card for someone's else's animal named Minnie (my pets name was Petey). I had a male dog who was with them for thirteen years, and that was the best they could do. Send me a sympathy card meant for someone else. They don't care about the customer they just care about the dollar bill. Severe lack of public relations, which they suck severely at doing. I will most likely get a response on here asking me to email them, or they will be giving me a call to discuss this post. They did it to me once, and I changed my comment. But, now that I have received a sympathy card for someone else's pet five months after my dogs passing is PATHETIC! This is the reason I want to repost my true feelings about this company. Way better choices out there, I suggest shopping around."

"We’ve been with this company for 5 years. Our dog just turned 7 years old and they raised our premium from $90 to $160 a month. Why? They claim it’s because vet prices are rising in our area, but that’s simply not true. Our vet is the exact same price. Our dog has absolutely zero health issues. The only thing that changed is he got a year older. Trupanion says they “never increase your monthly cost because you’ve submitted an invoice or because your pet ages.” Absolute lies and total scam of a company. And just to add—I’ve never written a bad review for a company before. I just don’t want anyone else to ever be put in this situation."
