Alta Plaza Park
Steiner Street, San Francisco, California, United States
About the Alta Plaza Park
Alta Plaza Park, located on Steiner Street in San Francisco, California, is a popular tourist attraction and park known for its stunning panoramic views of the city and Bay. The park features a tiered staircase that climbs the steep hillside, leading visitors to the summit where they can enjoy the scenery from benches under the shade of trees. The park also includes a children's playground, basketball court, tennis courts, and an off-leash dog-play area in the southeast corner.
Originally a quarry, Alta Plaza Park was purchased by the city in 1877 and established as a park in 1888. It was landscaped by Park Superintendent John McLaren, who also worked on nearby Lafayette Park. During the 1906 earthquake and fire, the park served as a campsite for refugees. In 1971, the park was featured in the movie "What's Up, Doc?" where several cars were driven down the grand staircase, causing damage.
Currently, the park's tennis court is undergoing improvements, including the addition of pickleball striping. Visitors can report any maintenance or vandalism issues by calling 311 or clicking on the provided link. Wheelchair access is available from Scott and Jackson streets. Visit Alta Plaza Park for a relaxing day surrounded by nature and stunning views of San Francisco.

Reviews of Alta Plaza Park
"I love coming at sunrise with my (cutest ever) red heeler. We share the park with a few early birds. A couple of people walking the stairs on the Clay Street side, maybe a trainer or two working with clients. A few people leisurely walking with their dogs. Everyone is friendly."
"It is a great place to practice different sports parking available and the neighborhood is great very close to the bay area, inside of pacific heights close to the numerous places to take lunch breakfast or dinner. It is accesible by different bus services."
"This park was absolutely gorgeous! I did not rent a car so every place I went while in San Francisco was a walk. What I wasn’t used to where all the steep streets and stairs, but I was okay getting a little workout in while traveling, LOL. There were so many places to sit and relax and take in the views from this park. They have tennis courts that you can use and also dogs just got to roam free. I was in San Francisco for two weeks and walking about 2 miles to this park from my hotel. I never felt unsafe or uncomfortable on the walk or at the park. If you’re able to handle the steep streets and stairs I definitely recommend making it a walking visit. Obviously with any city just be aware of your surroundings at anytime or just don’t walk at midnight, LOL. Safe travels everyone and be safe."
"Alta Plaza Park sits atop a lush green tree-lined hill in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco. It's beautifully landscaped and features multi-level paths with several benches facing the panoramic views of The City and Bay. This accessible-friendly park has: two tennis courts, a multi-purpose court, playground, dog play area, public restrooms, big shady trees, and a circle of benches at the far top corner, overlooking the scenic neighborhood below. It's was so peaceful and relaxing to stroll around this beautiful, clean, and very picturesque park, which wasn't crowded on a Saturday afternoon."
"This is the best neighborhood park! I live quite near and often walk through it. It's only a short distance from Fillmore, so there are lots of places to get coffee or lunch for a park picnic. It's on a hill with many levels and great wide views. You can pick the view you like best (like those Choose Your Own Adventure books, remember?). I like the benches that face north, where I can see the bay and cargo ships passing by. The park has a lot to give, like tennis courts, a basketball court, a playground, stairs for exercising, many benches, views, and lots of green areas. In spring, the north part is covered with tiny daisies and in early to mid-February, there are some plum blossom trees that bloom. They look a lot like cherry blossom trees, but they're different and bloom earlier. They are very pretty and colorful. This is a wonderful park that has something for everyone."
