About the Richardson Grove State Park
Richardson Grove State Park is a beautiful park located at 1600 U.S. 101, Garberville, California, United States. The park features campgrounds including Huckleberry, Madrone, and Dawn Redwood Group Camp, which fully reopen a week before Memorial Day weekend. The last night to camp in Huckleberry and Dawn Redwood is the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.
Madrone Campground is open between 9/2 to 5/24 (off season) as walk-in only with self-registration available at the park entrance (cash/check only). Closures can be predicted in hazardous weather conditions with wind speeds over 55mph. Dogs are not allowed on trails except for service animals.
Visitors can reserve campsites and lodging six months in advance from the current date, based on availability and the park’s maximum stay rules. The park has grown from 120 acres to 1,800 acres with the help of Save the Redwoods League and other generous donors.
Located a four-hour drive from San Francisco, Richardson Grove State Park features stunning coast redwoods over 300 feet tall and a national “wild and scenic” river, the South Fork of the Eel. Visitors can swim or wade in the river in summer and try catch-and-release fishing for salmon or steelhead in the winter. The park offers nine miles of trails for camping, picnicking, and hiking, including the unique “racetrack” path passing many unusual redwoods.
In the summer, the park is lively with the visitor center and nature store open. Summer activities include campfire programs, Junior Ranger activities, and guided nature walks. Access is easy off Highway 101, which bisects the park seven miles south of Garberville. For updates on events happening in north coast parks, visit the North Coast Redwoods Facebook and Instagram pages.

Reviews of Richardson Grove State Park
"Absolutely amazing place to stop! So much fun!"
"Worth every penny of the day use fee, would have been great to see the lodge open but we enjoyed a walk through the trees and a picnic. If you pass by stop in and spend some time with these magnificent trees, you will feel renewed for your onward journey."
"Tania, the Ranger, was very friendly and attentive, and even showed my kids some bats in a tree! Beautiful State Park. Definitely will come back."
"It's like being in an enchanted forest.... Surreal, ethereal and unique experience. We went here during low tourist traffic season and it's the time to visit as a Californian. It's an escape from the hustle bustle of city life and was quite and peaceful. You could hear your rushing thoughts in the beautiful silence surrounded by giant redwoods... Gorgeous day spent!!!!"
"If magic and fairys exist they exist here. It is beautiful and has wonderful hikes to go on and a great swimming hole. The visitor center is cozy and informative with a few snacks and cute gifts and a lovely backgammon set in front of a fire place that we enjoyed. I've been taking my kids there for 20 years and they love it every year. From babies just staring up at the trees to kids zipping along the campground on their bikes to jumping off the big rocks at the swimming hole as teenagers/ young adults. It's great for all ages! They are serious about the 10pm quiet time so if you are looking to party it isn't the place. Great for families and those looking for a quiet camping trip (although there is some freeway noise)"
