The Dunes

"Know your history Coronado! These are not dunes... at least not naturally occurring dunes. Back in 1988, a combination of a high tide and storm washed a huge amount of kelp up onto the beaches. A City of Coronado employee, Armando Moreno, was tasked with cleaning it up. Armando decided to bury it in the sand and add ice plant to the top of it to create a series of letters - CORONADO. This took place over a two-year process. Just to the north are the letters BEACH CA but aren't as defined as the first ones and are easily missed. Over the years, the dunes have been slowly settling and eroding and will likely not be visible in another 10-15 years."

"It’s a fun maze type place for kiddos to run around. But the best part is that if you zoomed out and looked at the Dunes from above, you’d read out Coronado. And there is a cute little story behind it :) If you have sensitive feet, be careful walking barefoot."
