"I spent an hour exploring Santa Margarita County Preserve. I hiked on the Santa Margarita Trail and went as far as I could towards reaching the end until water prevented me from continuing. I wasn’t prepared to wade across the river. The trails are well marked but not very clean – it’s obvious that trash floats down the river and settles in the park. The trails are mostly sand – some wet and some like the beach sand that water never touches. No other people were around when I hiked on a Friday morning. Equestrians may also use the preserve – the huge, dirt parking lot accommodates horse trailers. The preserve does not have a visitor center, but there are a couple of porta-potties in the parking lot."
"Beautiful hike along the river. Some garbage. Have to cross the river."
"Such a nice area for a nature walk. Love the shaded trails and the water nearby. No real hills to hike if you stick to the main trail so it's quite enjoyable. I've also done the trail on my mountain bike and that is also fun, I would just do that on a weekday. Weekends can be busy!"
"It was absolutely gorgeous! However I wish they had more info on the actual trail itself. Dogs are allowed! I brought my dog Morty. Please bring your own bags just in case there aren't any stocked. Sand was very soft and deep as you go through, I had a ton of sand in my tennis, I recommend actual hiking boots for this trail."
