"I suffer from severe osteoarthritis in my back which has been successfully managed with a pain patch for two years. This was prescribed for me in Guadalajara, Mexico where I live but is very expensive because it's not covered there by Medicare. I wanted my prescription to be filled in the United States so I made an appointment with the Relieve Pain Center in San Diego for my next visit. I come to San Diego twice a year. I was told I would need to pass a drug test in order to be prescribed. This doctor is out of network because I've been unable to find a single doctor in the entire UCSD Health network who will prescribe opiodes. I'm seventy five by the way. I explained to the doctor at this office my living situation who never let on that it would be impossible to get a prescription because by the time I came back in six months, the original drug test would have expired and I'd have to take another drug test which takes three weeks to process plus another appointment. I'm never in the US for three weeks so this entire medical episode was a complete waste of time and I got no help or understanding whatsoever. I'm disappointed in this office for their rigidity but also realize they must have to be due to the hysterical attitude toward pain medicine in the United States. All must suffer due to the irresponsibility of drug companies, the FDA and innocent people uneducated about addiction. It's a sad state and so avoidable."
"Dr. Van Noord takes the time to listen and pivot treatment as needed in a flexible and proactive approach. Having been to Scripps, UCSD and Sharp pain doctors, my experience is that many will test some medications, proceed to perform test injections and a RFA (or in one case a spinal stim) and then walk away and wash their hands of you and your pain having exhausted their go-to treatments. Dr. Van Noord has instead worked with me to approach the situation from multiple angles and has kept abreast of new procedures to chip away at this problem. The relieve pain center staff has also always been friendly all around, which is nice when you are hurting and cranky."
"The staff is very rude to people who have been in pain for 9+ years. They also discriminate against people who identify as animals. The staff was rude when they were asked why they have more than two genders on their questionnaire. When it was suggested they add species they became more rude. They claim they don’t discriminate, but it seems they do. If you pander to some mental illnesses you need to do that to all."
"*I'm reaching the limit so this review will be abbreviated* I'm a Veteran & VA patient. I did a lots of research & ultimately chose Dr. BVD at Relieve Pain Clinic b/c of the amazing 5-star reviews. I trusted these & believed that this would be quality care & a 5-star Dr. 1st, I met w/ a PA a month prior who quickly went over options. I still didn't quite understand RFA, I told myself that these are qualified people & I put my trust in them. She prescribed Valium for the procedure & assurance that the day-of would minor, easy, painless, & quick. She told me they needed further authorization b4 scheduling me for the 1st trial injections & they would call me. I waited weeks & no one contacted me. When I called, I was finally able to get in the system. (Were they ever going to call me? Turns out the VA had already approved me for the procedure. I didn’t need further auth/ but ok.) I wasn't prepared for what was to come. I picked up my prescription & followed directions on the bottle. I took all 4 10mg 1hr prior to the procedure, 2 before finally taking all 4. No 1 prepared me for what to expect for this procedure/directions on what to do. I kind of went in blindly but reminded myself that these were “experts” & that the Valium would help ease my nerves. Day of: I told the the front desk that I took all 4 Valium but was still nervous about the injections & wondered when the Valium would likely take effect, minimizing my severe anxiety. She laughed at me, then told me I was only supposed to take 2: 2 were for the 2nd round of injects/. I was completely unaware as no one communicated this or called me prior to explain, etc. I wondered if this was TOO much Valium & if I would overdose or be ok? The response was "I'm not sure, but hopefully not" & “you shouldn’t” from the Dr. & his staff. This gave me very little confidence & left me feeling even more worried that I would stop breathing/too much for my body to handle. The Dr. himself was very cold, cruel, demeaning, & demanding. As if me, being a patient, was too much of a nuisance. He had no sympathy for the fact that I was terrified & after hearing his response to the overdose question it left me feeling even more concerned. The injections were incredibly painful. 1 nurse who compassionate & kind who told me I could hold her hand. I was so grateful for her. I assumed it would be much like the dentist: you get the lidocaine/numbing & wait a bit before the procedure starts to allow time for it take effect. Easy. This was not the case. There was no waiting time for the numbing to work. It was rough, harsh, fast, abrupt, forced, & PAINFUL. I screamed so loud, all while the Dr. was telling me things that made me feel small, stupid, & an overall feeling of uncomfortable. The pain was unbearable I had to scream "stop!" for them to ultimately stop. It felt rushed, as if the Dr. didn't wait for the numbing injection to occur. He seemed rushed, annoyed & ready to get it over. It was hard to breath since I was crying so intensely. The Dr. seemed angry that I was so upset & told me “We’re cancelling your next appt & we're stopping". That point, my face was puffy, swollen, red & was hard to breath because I was crying. He very coldly gave me some sort of "next steps" or direction on what to do next in which I questioned why he would attempt to give me directions after: 1.) I had just taken 4 10mg Valium & wasn't in a sober enough position to be understanding next steps 2.) I was left completely traumatized & was still crying so intensely, how could any1 be coherent enough in that state? This was ludicrous to me.I asked if he could send this information AFTER this experience bc there was no way I'd retain this info in that state. I was so traumatized ATM my whole body was shaking & still crying profusely. He said very firmly "I'm not going to do that". Which left me feeling even more uncomfortable ready to go home. My thoughts were: Why would the Dr. NOT send me info on next steps once I was in a stable to retain the info? Are we not in the business of helping people here? What is going on?"
"Dr. Van Noord, Samantha Estes, and everyone at Relieve Pain Center is incredible. Chronic pain is a difficult health issue to manage and it is always stressful finding a new care team. Relieve Pain Center not only provided me with consistent and great quality care, they caught a serious issue my last doctor failed to identify. In addition, the front office is the most well managed I have ever seen. I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes past my appointment time as they are consistently on schedule. Despite this, the appointments never feel rushed and the nurses are always fantastic. As a student with a hectic schedule, I know I can count on this practice for timely and efficient appointments. I needed surgery and the entire office went out of their way so I could recover between semesters. I have never been to another doctor that would advocate so much for patient care - particularly when it comes to other aspects of my life such as school. I have been consistently in doctors offices for a decade now and I can confidently say that Samantha and Dr. Van Noord are the best. I am so lucky to be their patient and I know I am receiving the best care. I truly cannot recommend this group enough. To them, you are a person in need and not just another chart. They treat you with respect, care, and truly do their best to help!"
