Reviews of UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center
"UCI Chao Cancer Care doctors are great! The staff overall are also great. The only thing that sucks is the long wait time sometimes and the scheduling part in the beginning. We have been playing phone tag with a scheduler and every time we call back, someone would either hang up on us or said she is on another line. In this time and age, especially for a big hospital like UCI, this scheduling piece is not too efficient. As patients we would love to be able to schedule through MyChart and the less we have to spend time with these calls is better. Save everyone time, especially for cancer patients who don’t have much time left. Just a thought. But we would still choose UCI over other hospitals in this area. UPDATE: I have to say that the infusion center this morning at Chao has been a mess, especially the person who sat right in the front who collected the paperwork and is supposed to release the lab order to the lab. It has been an hour since our scheduled time and still no lab work is done. Came back to check with her 2 time and this is what she said “We have 162 patients and you’re not the only one”. Not sure what that’s supposed to mean, like a patient is just another fish in the ocean for UCI??? But if you have that many patients, maybe not scheduling them all at 1 time and told them to come early then this happens? Patient is expected to be all day here at UCI seeing multiple doctors plus chemo and radiation and I can’t believe the person who is responsible to release the lab order is the bottle neck."
"Got cancer? Dont come to chao family at uci. Instead of saving time for patient by reasonable arrangement appointments. They do some first, after that request you do some other appointments, which are could be arranged 1 time at beginning. Feel like extending forever to start the treament. Wanna savig your treasure time? Go to other places."
"I used to be a patient at UCI location in Costa Mesa until my insurance dropped it due to becoming a satellite office. So I was referred to a new oncologist that I really like. However, since starting going to the Chao Cancer Center, I find it so difficult and stressful to deal with their nurses making appointments for anything. Anytime I lean on them for help, my appointments get screwup and end up staying there the whole day due to mismanagement or overbooking. What I like about the center: 1- My oncologist Dr. Parajuli is extremely knowledgeable, caring, great Bedside manners, never rushed me and always ask if I comprehend the information he shares. 2- Rosa and others downstairs in the lobby are wonderful and so helpful. What I don’t like: 1- if you don’t want to waste too much time, use the walk in Clinic on the right side of the center for blood work instead of the labs on the second floor. For example, my appointment today was at 1pm and got in 1.5 hour later. Then was poked three times by inexperienced nurse however, forth time was a charm and done by a different RN. Felt like a Guinea pig :( 2- If you get infusion, there is no consistency with location. It could be in the back or front. Infusion center is noisy and outdated. My favorite nurse was Mina. Very caring, professional and will go above and beyond to make comfortable. 3- Waiting room on the second floor alway filled with bottles of water and patients leave their junk on the chair. I spent couple of hours in the lobby today and no one came to clean or sanitize. 4- I noticed that comments or notes left by lab RN are not truthful sometimes. They will say anything to save their butts. So be sure to check after visit summary on your chart to discuss with your doctor later. Obviously the most important thing is having a good oncologist who can support you and provide you with an excellent treatment. However I thought I would share my experience and I hope it’s helpful."
"My sister was diagnosed with Grade III Anaplastic Meningioma, which is a very rare brain cancer. She has been under the care of Dr. Pawan Singh for almost a year now. Her prognosis is not good, but Dr. Singh placed my sister on an aggressive treatment plan which has slowed down the growth of her brain tumors so that she can live as much of a quality life as possible. Dr. Singh and his team have been so patient and understanding of my sister's emotional stress that her disease has brought on. Dr. Singh has been in close communication with us throughout and we are forever grateful for his and his team's hard work and support. Chris Porto, the Social Worker on Dr. Singh's team has been our hero throughout this terrifying, confusing, and mostly impossible ride. Any time I call or email him, if he does not answer his phone right away, gets back to me within minutes with answers to any and all questions we have for him. We could not have found our way around the healthcare system without Chris! I hope for all that are going through cancer have someone like Chris on their team. Chris has taken away so much of the worry one experiences during a time like this. We have always felt so safe and secure with him on our team. I want to thank Dr. Singh, Michelle, Dawn, and our hero, Chris for all they have done for us. There are no words for how grateful we are to them. God Bless all of them."
