Reviews of UCLA Stein Eye Institute
"Have a painful eye issue that needs treatment, and unfortunately my insurance requires me to go through the UCLA health system. Called at 2 in the afternoon, the recording said there were 3 people ahead of me in line and I could get a callback. 2 hours later, still no callback. I called and was on hold for 2 more hours before finally giving up. Seems absurd to not even be able to get through in 4 hours to someone on the phone. And unacceptable to not even get a call back by end of day to explain they're closing and will contact me tomorrow."
"My retina doc is very nice. I cannot reach their office via phone or portal messaging. I finally canceled the appointment I was inquiring about. Two weeks later I got a vm they've been really busy and an appointment suggestion a few months later with no answer to my question. Tonight I hit my eyeball with my cane - the irony. It burns and I know the ER will say follow up with your eye doctor. Debating using my dog's antibiotic ointment. I'm getting into the scary stages of RP, but I feel like there's no one to turn to. I really don't want to go on the search for another doc, but I think that's the only option."
"The MDs are good but the place is a parking and bureaucractic nightmare. HOWEVER, I BARELY EVEN SAW THE MD. THEY HAVE YOU SEEING AN OPTOMETRIST NOT THE MD YOU WANT WHICH WAS FRIGHTENING. They have incompetent and understaffed back office and administration. I was going to have surgery there but cancelled. I felt that if anything went wrong afterwards, I would be on my own and at the mercy of the glacial pace of the secretaries, billing staff and administrators. The patient portal acts as a one way valve."
"The actual institute/medical services provided are great. They have helped maintain my dad's vision, despite his glaucoma. Dr. Giaconi is the best--wonderful doctor & surgeon, and great bedside manner. Unfortnately she has a long wait for her many patients, probably because she's that good. As a returning patient, expect to spend your entire day here, then sit in traffic again afterward if you're not on the Westside. Average wait time after initial check-in with the technician is 4 hours, no matter how early or late your appt is scheduled. I've waited up to 6.5 hours before. Parking is a bit expensive ($15) and limited, especially for the disabled. If you plan on coming here, the doctors are worth it, but you will have to spend your whole day here. I highly recommend arranging transportation if you're disabled or plan to get your eyes dilated. I wish UCLA could improve the wait time, as I think 2 hours max would be appropriate, not 4-6+ hours. Most of these patients are older, so sitting for a long time is difficult for them, and time-consuming for the caretakers to spend an entire day for 1 appt."
"Today, my left eye was badly hit by my children's toy gun bullet and I went to Stein Urgent Care , but they did not accept me because of my insurance, even when I told them that I was willing to pay for the visit, they still did not accept me and asked me to call my primary care doctor for an authorization. I even had a referral letter from another optometrist explaining that my eye condition is not good. My eye could not see properly and I was in a lot of pain. I was sitting in the yard crying and calling my primary care doctor for the authorization which I didn’t get while I was there and I left."
