North County Self Defense

"Really disappointed that things have ended this way...my son was taking Karate lessons with them for months but we became really busy when his homework load increased from school. We last attended in October, by November 15th, I realized we just needed to quit, at least for a while. I notified them we hadn't attended classes since October and they insisted we still provide 30 days notice. So despite us not being able to attend classes, and letting them know on 11/15 to cancel, and the fact they had just charged us, they still charged us another $195 today, December 7th, for classes we can't and didn't attend. We have attended other martial arts studios before and never experienced this policy. I think 3 weeks notice should have sufficed. It's too bad they chose this because I thought we would return in the future, but not after this. Besides charging $195/mo for karate classes, they charged around $75 for a belt test for a white belt. White dragon martial arts and many others never charge belt fees so that should have been a warning. Every class they are pushing selling some program or activity, and they often cancel the Saturday classes that are supposed to be available for "makeup" sessions because they choose to do sales pitch days instead. We showed up on a Saturday to attempt making up missing a class on a weekday and they had instructors just sitting at tables selling classes instead of teaching. They close for the entire week of a holiday and give very short notice that they will closed around holidays, not just on the holiday itself. The classes themselves were OK but it always felt like there was a lot of sitting around because there's only one instructor and so many kids. Beware of their 30 day policy, belt test fees , lack of promised "makeup" days and heavy sales environment."

"I initially was invited to NCSD to try out a free class for my 3 y/o son. My son is kind and loving, but had a bit more difficulty focusing, listening, staying still than other children. When we entered the school, we were welcomed and made to feel comfortable. The instructor was so patient, kind, and understanding for my son. After only a few weeks, I could see the positive changes in my son... he was doing so well that I decided that I'd put my 2 y/o daughter in the classes too. Now, at only 4 and 5 y/o, they pick up their toys, brush their teeth, clear their plates, etc. without me asking. They do a great job at listening to instruction and being respectful. I am really impressed with level of skill and professionalism of all the instructors. I even started taking classes here and have been for almost 2 years. I love the high-energy classes and the invaluable training I have received. This is a great school and I wholeheartedly would recommend NCSD to anyone I know!"
